It is a bit difficult to go into the backup issue. I found Microsoft not helpful. I had Norton before and only when I copied the files myself did I realize that some could not be moved yet Norton never said so. Consequently I only trust myself. I have an external hard drive and once a week I copy everything to it. I keep all of my files in different folders in Documents. Very important files like Pictures and embroidery are also on CD's. I hope this helps a little.

After having my Hard drive crash and losing ALL my files, I had to pay $300 to have my data files restored by the Geek Squad at Best Buy. I was lucky they were able to restore them. Now I back up, automatically, all the time by Carbonite. I pay $55 per year. IT is worth every penny. I can go back at any moment and get a design I have accidentally tossed in the trash. It is just great. Then I also back up to an external hard drive once in a while, and I also burn to a DVD about once a month. It's a great idea to save your files in more than one way. I highly recommend Carbonite.

Hello, have you tried 'googling' the question? Usually there are several ways of doing this and you will find a way that suits you best. Personally I have 2 memory cards that get used for a weekly back-up. A memory stick would work just as well. I was told to avoid CDs as they have a limited life-span.

I have no idea how to automatically backup every day, and I should, I format my computer every couple of months just for fun, well not really for fun, it keeps my machine running faster, so here is what I do. anything that is important I store/save it to an external drive. Then when I format my machine I don't have to worry about losing important stuff, next thing is to go through and regularly save everything to a cd or dvd, this is a fairly reliable way to save your info, sometimes cd's can get scratched and you can't read them but not if you keep them safe, but then think about this, my son has stored dozens of short stories on floppy discs, computers don't come with floppy discs any more, so he can't read the files. One day our cd's will be useless also, so what I think is the best way, and I don't actually do this myself because I am not that organised, but to email stuff yourself in Yahoo, gmail, (not hotmail) and then save it to folders in your mail. as well as backing it up. The reason I don't do this myself is because my most important stuff is my designs that I digitize myself and they are all stored on my web hosting for my site anyway, and the photos I cherish the most are on facebook or on my blogs, So I have an insane system of keeping my eggs in many baskets.

Right now my husband & I are both using Macrium reflect (on my desktop external hard drive for back up and he has an external for his laptop). We are using the free trial version and we love it. It takes a snap shot of your hard drive so it will restore it exactly as it was. We currently are backing up each drive (I have c: drive for everyday programs and j: drive for all my embroidery stuff) separately so that if one drive crashes we only have to restore the one that does. Just google Macrium and you can then download the free version and start protecting your drives.....hope this helps

While , my husband says it is never lost. Take you computer to a tech, they will not only answer your questions but what looks lost to us is in there some where, and if it can be retrieved they will due it.

You can use Carbonite, which is online, but they charge about $50 a year.
Lots of the external disk drives come with a program on a CD that you load on your computer, and tell it to do a back up nightly. The back up program does this automatically. One of them is called BounceBack. I just drag the folder from the PC to an external disk drive and make a copy about once a month. Then I delete the last back up from the external disk drive. It's a little more work than using BounceBack, but when I went to solid state disk drive (more reliable), it did not have Bounceback. I also make copies on DVD and CD's as additional back ups periodically, so I won't lose more than a few weeks of free designs if the hard drive crashes.
