Are burp cloths supposed to be double layer - towelling and flannel(or cotton knit)?

I think that most of us do the burp cloths with the prefolded cloth diapers. It is thinker, and will catch more than if you use flannel. They are fun to do, and quick. Good luck with the project.

Might depend on who the 'burper' is! I had a 'really good chucker' myself, so after that experience, I'd certainly be making them at least double thickness!

Are pre-folded diapers an american thing? We get flannel nappies, or sometimes terry towelling ones - although I think most use disposables now. I've only seen prefolded ones in pictures, like here when they are used in projects.
I woulnd't think that the diapers are just in the US - try googling Birdseye, or Gerber prefold diapers. You may be able to find something local for you.

I made mine from thick terry towelling that I buy by the meter-bibs as well.A meter of 150cm wide towelling gets a lot of bibs & or burp towels

Hi Elizabeth, I've always used flat diapers and just fold in half then using red work type patterns stitch through both thicknesses. I've also used bleached muslin the same way, after 20 or so washes they become as light and soft as diapers.
