thank God, Discover has a fraud team and froze the account when they saw this as suspicious and only dinged the account for $400. Of course, we don't have to pay that, but everyone in America ends up paying for it, don't we? This is the 2nd time in 2 years this has happened to us and we are very careful wit our cards......the first time someone played Texas hold 'em on line to the tune of $500....which again was caught. Discover told me these people have a system where they just select random #'s, but I don't get how they get the security codes to match up with the acct #? Anyway am pretty bummed....have to wait for the new cards and then notify all my auto payment vendors of the change.......I really have better things to do, like make state ornaments!!!!! Vicki, consider yourself "hugggggged"!! It never ceases to amaze me how many people work nonstop to scheme and steal from others! Apparently, it works well, cause they keep doing it!!
I only use one card for most purchases, and especially items bought online. I check this account daily to see if there are purchases I did not make.

I told the guy at discover card that with times as hard as they are, I could even understand if they bought food, I would even consider paying for that, but to buy stupid stuff like games and itunes...forget it!!!!!!!

I don't buy anything online anymore unless I can use my paypal account. I don't like the idea of giving my card numbers to unknown sites online. Even embroidery designs, if I can't use paypal, I don't need them.
Some say paypal is not safe either, but I have been with them for several years, and so far I've never had a problems with them.

Thats awful Basketkase :( It happened to my hubbie to, we live in Ireland and someone had been have dinner, staying in a hotel and renting a car with his credit card number in Poland!!! Thank fully we didnt need to pay either.

I feel for you. Happened to me-first online purchase and 2 in different states charged $2000 to me for airline tickets and I don't fly. Got resovled but took forever. Wish you luck!

We were on a camping trip and we hadn't taken any food from home. We were going to go shopping when we got there. We got gas and then stopped at Circle K and then went to Safeway. American Express stop the card at Saveway. So my DH had to call to see what was going on. They opened our account again. It was good to know that their are keeping an eye on us!

Discover is very good about watching this. Last Christmas we used it twice for large $ items and got a call that very evening.

Vicki, My husband has a Fraud Alert on our cards that notify him with a email, and text. The other day I was in WalMart and they were closing out all their fabric at 50% off. I filled two carts and let two cashiers handle it. I paid one cashier as the slower one was tallying up my other cart. Well he got the first alert in seconds and they froze my card on the 2nd one as the cashier tried to ring it up. The cashier pulled me aside apologizing all the time. We called the Credit Card company and they apologized but wanted very important info. Gave them the info. paid for my 2nd cart and off I went. I'm so glad that Fraud Alerts work. It's just I can't buy anything over $200.00 without my honey knowing. LOL

I have had this sort of thing happen, My bank was very quick to put a stop to it an freeze my card and reverse the payment. But these people are beyond belief. Imagine steeling money to buy itunes. There are other illegal ways of getting music without steeling the money from someone. Woops did I say that?

Our daughter had her identity stolen and the fraud people were able to catch the guy. She was in college at the time and had to skip some classes just to deal with the hassle it caused her. My DH and myself spent the last hour and a half shredding stuff with our names on it (it is a rainy day here and gave us something to do.) When I buy online I keep a prepaid card with just a little bit on money on it. That way they can't get our banking information.

That's a good idea.....I was told this could have happen at a restaurant where they copy your info after you leave and that there are hand held scanning devices out now that people can hold next to your purse or pant pocket and it will capture your info off your credit cards through the magnetic strips.......nice, huh?

This happened to me one week ago. Same thing. Someone got my number and charged $1500 for some online clothing store. Discover called me and are sending me a new card. It's a bummer to be without my main charge card. I've had to go back to writing a few checks.

If you are really paranoid, do a credit freeze with the credit reporting agencies. Then NO ONE can open credit as if they are you and steal your identity. It can cost up to $10 per credit agency. It shuts down identity theft. People can still steal your credit card number and use it, but they can't steal your identity, and open credit as if they are you.

I try to only use Paypal on internet purchases and I went on ebay and bought RFID card shields that you put your credit card into and they have a metalic liner so those people with those electronic things that steal your info can't access your cards. There are still other ways, like restaurants where they take your card and bring it back but I think if you insisted they would let you go to the register and keep your card in your sights at all times.
