Last night my DH and I sat for 1 hour in total darkness. There had been so much advertising for Earth Hour that I thought we should do our bit. We stood on our balcony and I am sure that we were the only ones who turned out lights. Does nobody care here in SA?
It makes me soooo cross........

So sorry Sarah - it really is hard to get a community to follow through on something like this - I noticed that some in our area also did this - but then - some were out and we couldn't tell if they were partcipating or not.
Good for you for doing your part.

Hi Shirlene. I have just been looking at CNN on face book and it is interesting just how many places did their bit.

I have turned off all tv and radio news and don't read newspapers or online news, so I'm afraid I wasn't aware of it.
But I have replaced all our light globes with the Long-life, low energy ones and I just bought planet arc energy saver power boards to connect all the entertainment centre to.
They have a master plug hole and four slaves and when you turn off whatever is plugged into the master plug, all the slave plugs shut down power to whatever is plugged into them.
So, I plugged the surround sound amplifier into the master, the telly, dvd, foxtel & stack DVD into the slaves, now as soon as hubby switches off the amplifier, everything turns off, thus saving power, because they would normally be on all the time.
Cost is $49.95 from Coles but they are a surge protector as well.
Does this earn forgivesness for missing earth hour?

OH, and I've been recycling everything applicable (including husbands) for over 15 years now and I'm obsessive over water usage too, I believe in showering with a friend. :-)))
Meganne - you made me smile - thanks - you are forgiven
OH Meg, recycling husbands, that is a crack up.

At the party that I went to last night there were candles everywhere and they were lit just before 8.30. This home was up reasonably high and you could look out over Adelaide. It was so romantic with just the candles, but the lights of Adelaide did not switch off. Lyn

I am afraid I too was unaware, but we have every energy saving devise imaginable in our house and we turn everything off at the wall, funny our power bill has not reduced :)

Actually I wish I had have known, I could have sat in candle light reading a book instead of watching tv for a change.

Vent away, at least you did something. A lot of people just don't care.

Sarah when this was introduced int 2007 I told my family and friends of this and they laughed at me. Anyway they swithced off the lights on Table Mountain. I personally think they try to get big businesses to follow bacause they are the culprits. Huge office buildings and car dealers have their lights on right through the night and the car dealers even throught the day. People must just get used to the idea.

I have this marked on my calendar, and I forgot!!! I am trying to ice some cakes, which I have not done lately and I was searching for the icing bag.My home made bags that I tried to use did not work at all, the wax wrap I have is not suitable.I searched for a good few hours and I know it is somewhere.
Early this morning I shopped for a new expensive icing bag (not as nice as the old one) but the "bunny cakes" are done .I am going to make up the hour saving tonight.
I do care tho.

do you know, you can cut the corner of a ziplock bag?
I did this, but it also tore very quickly, I think they have altered the strength of our plastic ??
Thanks

WEll we decided to forego the actual Earth Hour as our area was without electricity from 20h25 Thursday nite to 09h00 Friday morning. Spent the morning totally defrosting the fridges as you can imagine we woke up to water all over the kitchen floor!! Last year we seemed to be the only household in our area who participated!! I am also a maniac with regard to wasting water, and carry buckets of our "shared" bath water out into the garden for watering - it's good exercise too!!
