This is a quote from the 1949 Singer Sewing Manual. The first sentence is ok, LOL LOL. Please put your coffee or tea down before you read this, you'll laugh so hard you'll spill something. And I quote: "Prepare yourself mentally for sewing. Think about what you are going to do...never approach sewing with a sigh or lackadaisically. Good results are difficult when indifference predominates. Never try to sew with a sink full of dirty dishes or beds unmade. When there are urgent housekeeping chores, do these first so your mind is free to enjoy your sewing.

When you sew, make yourself as attractive as possible. Put on a clean dress. Keep a little bag full of French chalk near your machine to dust your fingers at intervals. Have your hair in order, powder and lipstick put on. If you are constantly fearful that a visitor will drop in or your husband will come home and you will not look neatly put together, you will not enjoy your sewing as you should."

See, I told you guys that I ALWAYS have on my nicest clothes, my hair done, and full makeup.....NOT! That is hysterical, We've come a LONG way baby! ;)

Thanks for sharing this marjialexa. Lets see, I am now in shorts, t-shirt, slippers, no makeup, but my hair is pulled up.(I am getting ready to sew, and would hate to stitch my long tresses into a design) - Bed is made, and dishes done, but other than that? May never happen. This was great!

OK, you are correct, that is a HOOT-not sure I have ever been lackadaisical about sewing (or anything else I do). But, my dirty dishes are in the dish washer and, OOOOH darn I just spilled my "little bag of French chalk" guess I can't sew now - well I will just have to stay on the computer among all the "Cuties". Ooh my, how times have changed... I think I am going to have to look up the word "lackadaisical" up in the dictionary and I don't have room for "French chalk" in my messy, cramped sewing room. Where can you get "French chalk" anyways? Well, my husband works night shift and is still in bed, the babies and I are all still in PJs, and the ideas of a clean house went out the window a few years ago, when I had a baby... I guess according to Singer in 1949, I am a failure. LOL... Thanks for sharing Marji!

It had me laughing so much that I intended to answer the question and instead added a comment. Guess a lot of us are going to have to rethink our attitude to sewing! Not!

That's just too much! lol Our priorities certainly have change! If we did that most of us would never be able to fulfill our passion for embroidery!

Okay , I am sitting at 3:10 in the afternoon. I did shampoo the carpeting. but I still have my PJ;s on, I have not even run a brush through my hair today.lo! as for my husband coming home, He's here. and has aright asked me if I plan to put some clothes on today. I told him "Why" I am not going out today, and I am busying chatting. I'v got it bad girls, I also told the poor man as far as eating today, he knows how to make a sandwish, or go get sometime. I was telling him that I must read all the comments,that I have been busy with the grandkids and have not had time to visit with you all for days now. He slowly backed out of the room about three hours ago, and I have not heard from him.:):):):)

I got that email this morning and died laughing. I'll just bet a man wrote it! Wonder what happened to him when his wife read it?

marji, how funny - glad I didn't live back in 1949 - well, I did I was a baby - I meant have to put up with that sort of thing - my word - how did our mother's ever become the women that they are today - with that sort of thing being pushed down their thoats. I am trying to be funny here. But seriously - I am glad that I live now. *4U

Marjialexa you also brigtened my day- like Brendaleas in her answer. Luckily the time is different nowadays. I wouldn`t have "survived" in those days! I never use lipstick and rarely makeup - if I would, my husband would think I`m going in to ball.Usually I put on comfortable cloths (NO dress), comb my hair with my fingers and clear my unfinished works out of the way so that I find my table and then I`m ready. And just forget (or trying to) mess in home, dishes,husband and child -at least for a while. A*4U

1949 Singer--I think my mother had an electric machine just like that picture. By that year, I was probably making doll clothes on it.

MY OH MY lets see here 1949 nope not me. The twinkle in my daddy's eye did twinkle out. That seed was already planted for early the next year I was born!!!!!Sorry ladys I must of came from that era some how. Bed is always made when get out of it. Dishs not no more!!! clean clothes no dresses here!! Hair and make up always wouldn't be caught with out it done up just so. Slipper most all day and half night.Clutter eveywhere but all good clutter mine you. scrapes of paper all over top of computer table with site I'm going to check out some time in next hundred years. No coffee or smokes. but diffently chocolate and soda some where here if the gand girls didn't find them all. Thats me my friends. Warm hugs and flowers to all.

if any one from that era entered my sewing room i would be bared for life from ever sewing again.loved this item... I think that the clean dress is to keep all the new materials you work with clean and fresh. As a dressmaker you shold always be clean especially when sewing for others . Material takes on odours quickly and some materials need drycleaning.And some things new don't look new onced washed.

Well, girls, it has been loveley, but as I am going to jail soon, I fear I shant be back. You see, I read this piece of 1949 rubbish to my husband and he agreed with it. However, while they might lock me up, they will never find his remains.......LOL

I printed this off last week & took to my sewing class/"gossip" group. The response was great. Don't know how many copies were taken. Made our day.I liked the new version for today's woman.:)
