bkd Forget Allbrands for a tutorial on embossing, went there & looked. You can download free embossing designs on Alphas though. What happens is the design is sewn around the font & the font simply pops up at you especially if you use the same color thread as your background is.

Think of it as mashing down all of the fabric around a design using an exact color match as your project piece. For example imagine a circle on a towell that has an "A" in the center of the circle. The "A" is the blanket or towel fabric undisturbed, but everything out to the edge of the circle is "mashed" down by thread. Is that clear as mud?;)

Embossing gives a three dimensional look to the embroidered item by sewing the item as lbrow pointed out. By stitching around a pattern, a silhouette of the pattern is formed. The sitching outside of the pattern is sometimes in a circle, rectangle or square. There are some really beautiful embossed designs available.

bkd, unless you are a digitizer - embossing isn't something that you can do - with a letter. It actually is the void of the letter - that is what makes the embossed look - the design is on the outside of the letter, as jrob says, the meshing down of the fabric or terry with lines or a real small quilting effect - help the letter itself stand out.
