Judy, I sure do - I always thought that was such a fun day and the pattern that the ribbon or material that was used was so pretty, too. What a great memory. Thanks!

Here are some photo's from a different era than mine - but we had just as much fun - as this picture show.

I certainly do also. We did it at college. I was lucky enough to be selected to be one of the participants. That was a long time ago and had forgotten about it until your posting. But the memory pop up easily. They were so pretty.

Had to come back. Went to Natchez, Ms Apr 4 -5 this
year to see the historic houses on tour. They did a
play about the history of Natchez and the teenagers
did a Maypole dance. It was lovely.

We never did and neither did my kids. Don't know why they didn't celebrate here in my area of Ohio.

Yes, we always did a Maypole dance in elementary school. Always invited parents to come to see it. Joyce

We danced around the May Pole in Elementary school. As a matter of fact - I had just mentioned it to family .... and, no one seemed to be very interested. So, I appreciated this post!!!!! *4U, Laura

Oh My Goodness!!!! what a memory you dug up!!!!

We always learnt to dance the maypole in Primary School, boys and girls alike. One day we got ourselves into such a tangle that the teacher stalked off in disgust to the staffroom and left us all to undo the disastrous knot high up on the pole. None of us had much lunch time left that day.

That's my immediate memory of the dance and I can't remember very much else about it, whether we ever actually did achieve all the variations to the dance. My guess is that we did, indeed, learn to do it all properly. The colours of the ribbons and the freedom from the classroom are still uppermost in my Maypole Career.

I loved the dancing and the pretty ribbons and I loved the music even more.

We still have maypole dancing here in England. Where I was over Easter, a Maypole was set up and there were queues of people waiting to dance. There was also a display yesterday at the May Fair near where I live. Along with Morris Dancing, the Maypole is an important tradition being kept alive by groups of devotees. Unfortunately not valued by all.
