When she mentioned it to me, it just reaffirmed my thinking. I am going to purchase a Brother SE 400 from the lady where mom bought her machine the next time I am up in the area - so next week. It took a little arm-twisting and convincing for my husband to say yes, but he caved when I told him I had some "mad money" stashed away that could pay for it ;) Now I will be able to test-sew the things I make :) up to 4x4 at least :)

I've just read up about the Brother SE 400 and it sounds like a brilliant machine.
As well as all the tempting sales talk make sure that good servicing is available to you when/should you need it.

That's actually why I am purchasing it 2.5 hours away from where I live :) I grew up in the area where I am purchasing it and I visit my mom (drro) who still lives there frequently. The lady that sold mom her machine has been immensely helpful to her and has answered all her questions and given guidance.
Good customer service goes a long way.
You are going to be up all night with a new machine!!! The only thing I would suggest, is if at all possible ... try to stretch to a 5x7 hoop machine. It will expand you to so many more options. But, still a 4x4 will give you lots of fun! Tell RO hi for me! You two will have fun stitching projects together! Jan

Congratulations! It is very good news. You will love every minute you use your new machine. I started approx 10 years ago with a Janome MC8000, graduated to a 9000, then a 10000, and now an MC11000. I have never regretted buying any of them and I don't begrudge any money I spend on threads or designs, etc. One word of warning, it is very addictive but great fun, and a wonderfully absorbing hobby.

If you want an economical machine with a large hoop, Singer has 2 models (which are identical machines) that come with a large hoop that is 6.23" by 10.24". You must have it connected to a computer to use it since it does not have a display. There are yahoo groups that help with any questions. Just search "Singer Futura".

At Joann's, search for Singer Futura XL 400.
I am going to stick with 4x4 for now, I think. If/when I digitize something larger I can always send it to mom (drro) to test sew it for me. Money is tight right now in my house since I haven't been working in 2 years and I want to keep costs down while I start on my new adventure. I am able to trade it in/up in 1 years time if I decide I want to upgrade my toy.

It would be worth asking if they have any machines that were used at the quilt and sew expo in your area. Sometimes they discount them a lot. Also check for trade in machines at a greatly discounted price. I don't know brother machine so I can not steer you to a particular model. Your Mom should be able to help you a lot. Kay

I think that is wonderful, 4x4 is a good standard size and it will really help you to create better designs. There is often a huge difference between what you see on the screen and what stitches out. This is so exciting because if you can test stitch you will learn so much more and you will improve your skills so much faster. I really am very excited for you and can't wait to hear how much fun you have, and also hear about your disasters, because you will have those too.
