The ones I used for the scrubbies are 12"x12" face cloths that I have bought. Welcome to Cute. Marg

Instead of using fabric as the applique I use 10-12 layers of net. I do not remove any of the face cloth. I have some in Projects. Marg

Yes, they are regular face cloths - with the scrubbie stitched on - and the face cloth removed from behind - just like an embroidered applique in the hoop.
