A jelly roll is an entire fabric collection that has been laser cut into 2 1/2" strips, rolled up like a bakery confection and tied with a bow. Each pack contains one 44" long strip of each fabric in the group.

According to this site:2.5" x 44" strips typically include 40 strips of fabric but can vary. I'm assuming that 40 is the norm, since that is what they called for in the quilt pattern.
Thanks for getting me to google, I also found a lot of places to get recipes for jelly roll cakes! Haven't had or made one of those for a while, and it has piqued my interest.

I did the jelly roll quilt yesterday in a group sew I attended, I have no idea how the lady finished it in 35 min's took me a couple of hours after I was at the point they started. each color was 2/3 yd so for 4 colors it was a total of 3yrds of material. I cut my own material instead of purchasing a jelly roll. I think this is the info you are looking for hope it helps. I will be posting a pic of the one I did later, have to pull my camera out LOL

I have seen different widths and different amounts of strips / lengths. I think you pay for how much the total yardage would be. I haven't seen this youtube yet, but I think I'll go there now. THANKS!!

The video's I saw all mentioned 40 strips in a roll.

Usually a jelly roll is 40 pieces of 2 1/2" materials by the width of the fabric (44?"). If you do the math, that comes to about 2 3/4 yards of fabric. I can't remember how many jelly rolls it stated the quilt top took, so I need to go back after it and take another look.

Depending where you buy I have seen 20 strip rolls and 40 strip rolls.

Just for those of you who don't know, Connecting Threads is a wonderful source for fabric at a reasonable price. If you've ever felt their fabric, you know what I mean.
