I purchased the software specifically for quilt applique. I tried the express trace, the express border, and all else I can think of. I'm not really into "embroidery" per se, but I thought this would be great for my applique quilt blocks. Maybe I'm making the process too complicated. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the Cute family! I have Janome software, not Viking, so I can't be of much help. There are several here who have your software, one named "mops". If she doesn't see this post, you might want to Private message her, see if she can help. Did you not get any lessons from your dealer with this software? Mops has 5D sitting rather idle on her computer, is rather accomplished with 3D, but there are so many improvements now. Have to study it to get to really know the program, at the moment I'm a confident beginner, by no means an expert!!

Nothing stopping you from joining all three, except for the number of emails you may receive.
There is also a Viking software group you can join and they send you out lessons every month.

I joined when I bought my Diamond and the 4D software came with it so when I registered the software online, I think it may have asked if I wanted to join their software group, it was free.

Any GOOD dealer would have told Lananana to save her money and buy Embird.
E is so much more user friendly than most other embroidery programs and there is so much free and inexpensive help out there for it, it is by far my program of choice, ESPECIALLY for computer challenged beginners who have a difficult enough time getting used to using computers without having to learn complicated programs.

Well i have 5d husq. but i am not to bright at it either .I use it to resize up and down ,to see the design ,to see what # is to stich out next the normal thing we all do when embroderying .I am to take lessons this winter to learn more myself carolyn

Well, I'm 75 and I'm not giving up....... but I have spent the entire weekend with my 3D program, instruction book in one hand, mouse in the other and I'm still on lesson one. I've been on lesson one for two years now. Each time I try it the black abyss becomes slightly greyer and this could be a good sign. The instruction book seems to be written for people far more astute and receptive than I, and it's a huge blow to my 'educated' pride that I can't figure out how to make the back of an eye-glasses holder for DHDon. I did have one finally digitised yesterday but I'm missing some instruction somewhere and I thought I had it saved but this morning I can't find it so.... it's back to lesson one again.... :{
It would be so much easier and kinder if the index said 'How to make the back of an eye-glasses holder' and just let me get on with the job.
Once I got that done and saved I could then take it to the embroidery module and edit the front with his name and a design...... that part is easy.
Way back I sought help and lessons for digitising and was told, 'Oh, it takes years and years to learn to digitise and I just get on with the embroidery and let the others do the hard work.' Not what I wanted to hear and not what should have been voiced since the speaker was an embroidery machine dealer.
Follow Meganne's advise because she's been there, done that and come out the other side with banners waving.

Hi, Alma! Just a hint about finding your designs, that I learned the hard way and got a few grey hairs over. I have Janome Digitizer Pro, and the native digitizing format is JAN, the machine format is JEF. Well, when I looked for designs I had saved as jefs, I couldn't find them and panicked. Then I realized the program defaults to the JAN files when you open a folder. Use the dropdown and select "all files", maybe that's where your elusive eyeglass case is. Sure hope so, hugs, Marji
TIP. I created a specific folder for my native digitising files and ALL of them go into it, then once I have created the machine format designs, they are stored in separate folders.
If I go back and do more work on the original digitising file, I will re-format and save OVER the machine formatted designs every time I do a revision.
It helps keep me organised. :-)

Thanks to Marji and to Meganne for helpful information. I am told to Save in .vp3 in the book and I did but I normally save in .hus format. I think I made that decision way back because .hus is so much more popular than .vp3 and I usually use whatever colour threads I have on hand nearest to the original design (if I want to).... otherwise I just use my own colours.
However, I'm back here again to do some more searching. I will beat this thing!!!!

They recommend .vp3 as it saved all information: the colours chosen, your own comments, and in 5D it save all settings of lettering as well, not just in the can-file but in the vp3 as well. Why not save vp3 when you digitised them yourselves and vip or hus for what you download?
Hi Martine - and that's exactly what I've been doing this last week. I digitised an eyeglass holder for Don, go to whoa, on the weekend and saved it in vp3 as instructed in the book. Then I read the book again.... :}.... and it said to Copy it to save it in any of the other modules. So I Copied it and saved it in my Embroidery Module as a HUS format design. Eureka!!! it worked.
I feel so chuffed that I've achieved. It's my first fully digitised, working and useful item, and Don loves it.
OK... small step in the digitising world but a Big Step for Me.

Meganne's the woman!! She comes thru for us. However, I don't understand why the dealer that sold you the machine & softwear isn't giving you lessons! For what we pay for it, I think a few free lessons should come with it!! My dealer gives lessons on the machine but I don't think the softwear lessons are too involved. Good luck and you CAN do it!!!!

I bought Husq System 5 Pro in 1999 (was only a couple of years younger then than you are now) and have upgraded again and again till 3D, which I used a lot until I bought Embird almost 3 years ago. I love that program! In January I bought 5D Pro, but have not done a lot with it. I am now watching all the tutorials available (you can access those by clicking the 'learning center' button), I find those give extremely good instructions. I should start using 5D more as I spent a lot of money on it, but when in a hurry it's Embird I choose.

I can't help with the 5D but I do have 4D and am older than you and have learned how to use it. Your dealer should have some free lessons but I found that they assummed you already know lots. You might try to ask if you could pay for an hour or so private one on one lesson. The absolute very best resource I have found are instruction manuals and video lessons from a man named Tim Frost. I will add his website and you can see if you think it would help you. He is doing 5D now. The books are a little pricy but I found it helpful to have directions right beside me in writing so I culd keep trying a lesson until I "got it". Good luck.

Check with your dealer to see if they have classes. Also you can join what they call the SOS club which has meetings at the dealer and online help. It has a fee but I don't remember what they are. Also, if you get the online newletter once a month they usually feature some aspect of the software.

To everyone who responded: Thanks so Much! When I purchased my new machine along with 5d software, the sales lady stated it had been so long since she had done any applique with the software package, that she had forgotten most of the procedures (my bad). That was 3-4 weeks ago, and I've not heard another word. UPDDATE: I think my hubby could tell I was getting frustrated, so he purchased the Embird program for me. Now that I've played around in the 5d software I'm getting more comfortable. Nothing finished yet; still just playing around.
I still cannot figure out how to increase the design (and keep it). My "blank" quilt block may be as big as 14"x14", but the design, a bird or flower or whatever, may be 10"x10" to be placed on the block. That leaves me 4" on all sides to square the block.
Again, thanks for all the ideas, suggestions and advice. I think I'm going to enjoy this.
