Yuck! I hate snakes. We get rattlesnakes out here.
Coyotes saunter our greenbelt,racoons destroy my pond (now fishless) and hawks have at it. It's nice to live next to greenbelt but not so much fun when
critters come to play. LOL

tHAT IS GREAT PICTURE, WHAT KIND OF SNAKE IS IT? mY FIRST HOME IS IN fLORIDA, AND WE DO HAVE A LOT OF POISON SNAKES, THE MOKASIN IS VERY DEADLY, THEY ARE BLACK, ORANGE, WHITE(i THINK) THERE IS A SAYING WHEN ONE THE COLORS IS TOUCHING ANOTHER ( i DO NOT REMEMBER IT) IT OR IS NOT POISON. i SAW ONE IN MY GARDEN SCREAMED MY dh CAME AND KILL IT, wE DID NT HAVE THE TIME TO SEE WHAT COLORS WERE NEXT TO EACH OTHER i AM AFRAID OF IT.

I was greeted by a hissing snake in the garage the other day. Of course, I'm all alone because DH is at work. I called my FIL and after he stopped laughing he said to get a push broom and push it outside of the garage. Did that (about about 50') and the stupid snake turned around and headed right back for the garage. Unfortunately, it was the last thing he did.

Eek; we have Copperheads in our yard, but none have ventured into the house! Since they are poisonous, I'm especially glad that they stay outside.

Sorry, but the way I feel is that the only good snake is a dead one!

I'm glad that wasn't me. I don't care for snakes and as long as they are in their cage, I can handle looking at them but not for long.
Don't have a backyard as we're in an apt. But we don't get much for critters in the city.

Wow!! I don't like snakes! I know there are good snakes, but growing up in East Tennessee, I was taught to stay away as there are many deadly poisonous snakes in the area.

Your husband was right to worry, your kitty could have been a snack.

That's a long snake! Little boy in our area was bitten on the finger by a copperhead this summer & last I heard they still weren't sure if he'd lose the tip of his finger or not. The snake man at our zoo said to leave snakes alone. Treat it as it is poisonous..don't mess with them. He wouldn't have to worry about ME messing with one! Maybe passing out, but not messing with it! We have 3 poisonous snakes in East Tn. I try to let the black snakes alone..but they get our bluebird eggs & babies! Wish I knew a way to keep them from crawling up the fence posts.

I wish I wasn't afraid but I don't even like worms in the grass...I'm glad my GC aren't afraid they get to handle snakes in school. Gives me the creeps. LOL To old to change guess

Oh, how beautiful! I live in an area with no poisonous snakes, so they have never inspired much fear in me. When late DH Richard and I lived in the woods along Chautauqua Lake, NY, and my Dancer kitty was a young man, we had a funny thing happen with snakes (among a million other things). We had a kitten named Patches, about 6 months old, and Dancer was her hero. She followed him everywhere, and did everything he did. Imagine my surprise when one day Dancer came waltzing down the hallway with a rather large garter snake in his mouth, dragging the head and tail. Little Patches was following him, with a BABY snake in her little jaws! Dancer had found a nest of snakes that had just hatched, he brought Mom and she brought one of the kids. Snakes in the house, what fun. Richard got a bit hysterical, I had to take the snake away from Dancer, get it and the baby snake back up into the nest, and keep everyone in the house until the snakes were big enough to go off on their own. Surprisingly, Dancer didn't even hurt the snake, but it was a mite irritated. The joys of living in the country. The hardest thing was trying to scrape Richard off the ceiling and get him to quit screaming like a girl, "Kill it!! Kill it!!" Lord, but he was a funny man, trying to climb the ladder with only one leg (he was an amputee) to get away from the snake, hee hee hee. Thanks for sharing, nice pictures. Hugs, Marji

I have no affinity whatever with snakes.
Fascination? yes. But definitely only in pictures.

My weird and wild imagination will have them slithering over my slippered feet while I sit here stunned into immobility.

We have tiger snakes as next door neighbours in the pine forest across the road but none have ever been invited near the house. DHDon once chopped one into pieces while mowing the orchard. He then put it together again and showed the little children, at home then, and told them not to go near any of these fellows.
We also have brown snakes, equally if not more so, as poisonous as the tigers living around the gum trees in the paddocks and while they remain in neutral territory they can hide there, but not near the house.

I expect we are safe harbour for quite a few Joe Blakes but they'll be in trouble if they ever venture into sight.

Trouble is...... tiger snakes are aggressive and brown snakes like to live around people....... YUKKKK!!!!

If something like that was in my backyard I would be in the front yard getting in my car and driving away. I'd come back when i was sure he was long gone.

Alice the reason the carpet snake was moving slow is because it was night. They are cold blooded and move very slow at night. If you encounter this snake in the day he will be moving much faster. Look out cat!!!!!!!!! Marg

He/she was an attractive looking thing, Alice. Did you think he might be a pet or just a wanderer? I daresay they get away from their owners from time to time.

And you even had a chance to get a picture of it. My motion sensor light kept going on a few nights ago, so I went to investigate. I had a bear in my compost bin. It was a bit too big for me to tangle with so I left it alone. I did try to get a picture, but trying to take a picture of a black bear at night is a bit harder than it would seem. The bear seemed annoyed that I interrupted a snack but otherwise ignored me. We don't have snakes here. Bears, possums, raccoons, squirrels, chipmunks, cougars, elk, deer and owls are everywhere though.

Alice, I thought I was cool with snakes until one night, about 6 years ago, when I as visiting a friend of mine, who keeps snakes as a hobby, got a very large one out of its aquarium and came walking towards me with it.

I could've broken the Olympic sprint record that night and that's all I'm gonna say on that. LOLOLOLOLOLOL!!!!!

Yet, over the years prior, I have had many snake visitors and moved them on, or disposed of them, depending on type and size and immediate threat to kids or animals.
When I was 2 y.o. my Mumsy found me outside in the yard (out bush at Burdett) happily playing with a black snake, which our dogs promptly tore to shreds.

Yes, I THOUGHT I was cool with snakes!!!!!!! hahahaha
