I had a look at the project.
Look at the hem on the left, it has a rounded edge and does not look like a square napkin. To make sure I just tried it out with an old one and that does not work.
I think it could be an oval placemat, one long end tucked under, the other one through the (straight) buttonhole?

I think that mops is right: The placemat must be oval and the trick is that rounded slit to pull the other end through. Maybe a cutie is club member and can disclose that secret ;-)

I don't think this is a placemat at all, I think like muffy says it is a napkin. Looks to have the design on the right side, in the area of one corner with the "buttonhole" toward the center on the diagonal. Then the opposite corner of the napkin is pulled through the buttonhole to the backside of the whole thing. This leaves the wrong side (see the hem showing)showing on the top. Then slip in the flatware into the pocket that is formed. The 2 corners that aren't involved are just tucked into the pocket as the other corner is pulled through. Or at least that is how I think it was done! Linda

I think that there is a buttonhole, because I've enlarge it and there must be a buttonhole somewhere in the middle. Marie
