Okay question for everyone since I am new at all of this lol. Is it important to have the 4d or 5d software, if so, which one works with windows 7 as I know it does not open vip3 files.

Welcome to cute but sorry I cannot answer your question as I use PE Design with my Brother machines. There will be someone along soon who will be able to give a answer

I have 4d, friend has 5d (new, more money some improvements, not sure you can still buy 4d) and we love our software! I open vip and vp3 files all the time, convert other formats to those, etc. Not sure why it wouldn't! I have Vista, friend has windows 7, both work well. Not sure if your question is "do I need it" or do I want it or can I use it or will I use it. I say yes, you will need some sort of software and if you have one of these they are great....but I have Extra, and edit alot. If you just have the basic system you can only organize, sort, delete, convert. Extra allows editing, changing colors, sizing, merging designs, etc. Pro is the top of the line but I couldn't afford it! Hope this helps, Linda

I have 4D Extra and am thinking of upgrading to 5D. It does open VP3. As Linda says you can do a lot with it. I have Windows7 and have had no problems with it.

It depends on your machine whether you need a card writer, a diskette, a USB-stick or use a direct link to your computer.
And in theory you don't need software to use a design if you can load it on an USB-stick. But software does more than that. I have 5D Pro which opens vp3 files (even the much older now obsolete 3D can)as well as most other files, I also have Embird. Both can edit, mirror, have an auto-repeat function (called encore in 5D), let you print the designs, etc.
What software you choose is a matter of personal preferences. I prefer Embird and it happens to be much cheaper as well. However, you have to buy pre-digitised alphabets, whereas 5D has a multitude of of them (over 100) as well as frames and florishes to use with your lettering, and shaping the words etc is easier too. 5D embroidery (extra) does not include 5D Stitch Editor (which I used a lot in 3D before I bought Embird), Embird has those possibilities in Basic.
Unfortunately most dealers only sell the software made for their embroidery machine brand, not Embird, so you can't compare them at the shop, but you CAN download a 30-day free Embird trial and see for yourself what can be done with it.
