I just used cotton and then they can be washed. They turned out great. Everyone loves them.

Cotton, wool, felt are all good choices. You want something to absorb moisture and heat.

I have tried 100% cotton - called "rubber sheeting" from joanns! I love it. feels like flannel! It is the stuff used for baby changing pads.

There is a batting that is used for post holders that is heat resistant. I don't know the name of it. It would be used in the middle of the coaster "sandwich".

Somewhere in my past I read about someone who used flannel-backed plastic table cloth as the underneath piece. If the flannel is stuck to the plastic, as in bonded, that would work well.

I've made coasters using thicker, firmer stuff - sort of like Timtex but not quite - and then used stiff felt as the underneath piece. That worked really well.

I've also made them using a firm cutaway stabiliser and felt on the top and the bottom. They were really nice for the Christmas Party. I didn't know about 'fuzzies' back then so I just trimmed the coasters as close as I could and no-one seemed to worry.

I use Insul-bright in my coasters/pot holders. Meg and I bought some only a few weeks ago. It's for heat/cold resistance. I don't know if it is sold in Canada, but I'm sure you must have something like it. Love and blessings Chris
