I am off to buy a new iron. I have had enough as I think the thermostat on my iron has gone and I have just 'melted' the second collar. I am so fed up. Feel better now I have vented a bit. Sarah.

Glad you feel better now Sarah! Hope you found a new iron that you like. For my newest one I decided it must give a burst of steam in the upright position and I actually found one cheap!

Good luck finding one that is nice. I bought one recently, and the handle part got hot instead of the sole plate. The store didn't believe me when I called, so I brought it in and offered to let them iron with it. They immediately refunded my $$.

Good for you, I alway feel better after I have vented a bit too. I am in need of a new iron too but am going to wait until after Christmas. Maybe Santa will bring me one.

In australia we have a product call "iron Shoe" that fits over the plate of the iron and all you do is set it to high and presto no scorches or melted collars. just google "steam iron shoe" they are not too may $ about $15....soozie

I have this and it works great, I have noticed that I have less puckering on certain embroidering since I have started using it.

Thank you for all your comments. I am back with a new iron. I will only buy Phillips irons as I really like them. It is a bit smaller than my last one but I love the plate which is shaped for difficult areas. I have just done some ironing and it irons well. Long may it last. *4 all. Sarah.

Also only use Phillips and the one with the special ceramic plate.

My husband was putting patches on one of my boys Scout shirt and as it's not something he regularly does - he melted three buttons on the front of the shirt - luckily the scarf he wears covers that

OOOH a new iron, how nice. I have been thinking I need a new one. I paid about $100 aus for the one I have but that was about 10 years ago. I think I might be due for a new one, it does not seem to be working as well as it did. But I have never burned or melted anything with an iron and I always have it set on high, I just alter my pressure or hold it above the item and hit it with steam if it is a delicate fabric. I know this is not proper ironing protocol, but it works for me.
