I need to vent. I was at the new Joanne's fabrics super store. I got a parking space which should have been a good sign. I found my elastic quickly but it had to be cut so I got a cutting number, #80, they were on #62. Seriously! It wasn't even busy in there and there was no line at the cash register. I did hear an announcement for another cutter to come. So I strolled around a bit, I needed a few notions. Then I sat at the sewing machine selling area and waited. There were 2 ladies cutting and 1 lady wrapping remnants. I figured she hadn't been trained to cut yet? I had been in the store about 20 minutes so far. After about 10 more minutes I asked if they could get another cutter and they said someone was coming. Then a couple more minutes and the remnant wrapper lady calls for the next customer. I flipped out. I asked her if she could have been helping customers all this time and she said her manager told her she had to do the remnants. A manager was standing nearby and tried to explain that they have a lot of remnants to take care of but I explained that I used to manage a fabric store and THE CUSTOMER ALWAYS COMES FIRST! I tried to wait my turn a little longer (they were on #75) but I was too mad so I just left. 45 minutes wasted and there is no place else around here to get what I need. They closed the Joanne's that used to be close to my house and made this bigger one and they still had the same amount of cutters working.
if you look irritated they cut even slower. I actually try to get most of my stuff online with free shipping to avoid the aggravation. I think they
know they are the only game in town.
I went to one black friday sale at Joanns and never
again!
Write to the store manager and file an official complaint. I think the only way "we" shoppers are going to get anywhere is to go to the top. The staff should know that the customer is always right!
I hope they get some training at those stores. Love and blessings Chris
Our Joann's prices are much higher than Hancock's. I don't like the Joann's because it has the inventory so packed in narrow little aisles it is difficult to find anything.
I remember years ago really enjoying a visit to the fabric shop and and stocking up on fabrics for sewing projects. The bad service now ruins the visit.

It has happened to us all, I suppose.

Here are more of my opinions.
1. I used to manage a fabric store so I do realize the predicament they are in. There is a budget for employee wages so hours assigned have to be limited and they usually look at last year's business to judge how to staff a particular day. (I remember "flat folds" that almost never stayed neat because it took too long to refold everything. Fortunately they got rid of flat folds and put all that sale fabric on bolts.)
2. The cutters looked like they were giving full attention to their customers which I appreciate so the blame goes to management.
3. True, I don't do a lot of online shopping for sewing and embroidery. I could do more. Honestly, I like to see and feel what I'm buying. In this particular case I wanted to make an elastic belt so I only needed 1 yard of black belt elastic. Can you buy that much online or do you have to get it in bulk? I will have to look into that.
4. For those that don't know Joanne's, a super store has sewing and crafts: yarn, paper crafting, beading, custom framing, and so much more. This store has nice wide isles and is very organized.
Thank you for the online store links! I'll need to start somewhere.
I once stood in line while 5 clerks wandered the store...putting away notions, fabric, and one just seemed to be wandering.....while ONE woman cut a line of 30 customers. I too was furious, and walked out.
Another time I had 3 "cutters" looking at their modem that they use to print up their cutting tickets,,it wasn't working....but one of them said, well there is another one there that is working...#1 said, I like this one (?) I want to get it working..#3 stood there offering suggestion on how to fix it.....while a line waited. #2 finally went to cut a woman, who had 15 bolts of fabric in her cart....#3 said, well it's time for my break...and #1 continued to fiddle with the modem. They need a brain transplant at that company!
I used to work in a privately owned high end Fabric Store. There were only two of us working at a time and that was really hard, so I give them some lee-way.
The thing that bugs me is once in a great while two of the cutters will stop and talk to each other while the line grows longer. I usually say something, like (I know you ladies are really tired and need a break but this line is out the door) and they hop to it!
JoAnn's is the only fabric within many miles so I'm happy it is a good one!
