Here's a simple Christmas ornament from theneedleofanne.com. I'm making these for my daughter to give her school friends for Christmas.

Thanks! I hooped 2 layers of WSS with a piece of material pinned to the top and then sewed out the design. Before the last two color changes, trim the material as you would with any applique design. I added the felt to the back, along with the ribbon to hang the ornament, then finished the last two colors (I used the same color). Then, I trimmed the WSS very close. Then I trimmed the felt next. I only wet the WSS just enough to get it off. I didn't want to get the ornament all wet. Also, you could add batting when you put the backing on. However, I didn't do that on this one.
I don't think you can tell from the picture, but I used silver metallic thread on the body, so it sparkles in the light.

For some reason, my comments get cut of. Perhaps too long? Should have finished:
After attaching the ribbon, sew last two colors. Then trim WSS and felt.
I wanted to make something as simple and inexpensive as possible. The kids are 5.
