LOOK WHAT'S IN OUR GUM TREE! I just wanted everyone to see this, as a lot of you don't read the Personal tabs. Just took this photo 20 minutes ago!
This gum tree is about 3 feet from our back deck. I climbed up a ladder whilst Trevor held it and looked inside the hole. We normally have Kookaburras and couldn't work out why they hadn't come - now we know!

1. Our beautiful Possum - it is a big one!!! (It's the Mum) there is also a baby one, but I couldn't see it.

Carolyn if you ever get to visit California there are some of our Australian Gums growing there.

The possum is definitely keeping your Kookaburra birds away. Guess if you want your birds to return when she goes out with her babies you could block the opening so she couldn't get back in and make sure there isn't any food source or fallen fruit to keep them fed. They are cute especially when all the babies are on the mom's back.

doesn't look like our possums. yours are cute, ours are ugly. Look like giant rats with long noses and a mouth full of teeth. they appear to be grinning!!

I know what you mean. One of my neighbors has one for a pet. He takes is dog and 'possum' out each night for a walk. The possum is around his neck. Not cute at all.

Hi there - I see some of you don't know what a Gum Tree is - well here is ours.
I have taken 2 shots -
1. As you can see the tree is very close to our back deck only about 3 feet away.
2. I've also taken a picture so that you can see the hole where the Possum is. The stick on the outside is there for when the Kookaburras take residence. We do close it up when not in breeding season, but this Possum got in before we could do it.

How cute but doesn't look like the possums we have around here. We only have white ones here at the lake and they only come around at night.

You are a good picture taker. How sweet but to bad for the birds. The gum tree looks like the Eucalyptus tree growing in California.

You're exactly right Angie - they are Eucalyptus trees - in Australia we all call them Gum trees, I don't know why, maybe because some have sticky residue. Love Chris

Welcome to possum world.Over the years we have had possums fall out of the palms landing at our feet ,pick themselves up & climb back up again un hurt.Cotton palms have serated edges along the fronds so one move the wrong way ,means a sharp jab & a fall if asleep .

Possoms and opossoms are the same animal. They do have pouches, the only marsupial in the US. Range in size throughout the world. They have prehensile tails which are not strong enough to hold the adults upside down, but the babies can. They have strong defensive immune systems against snakes. They have double wombs! And their fur is very soft. People eat possom in some places. Mommas carry babies on their backs!

Australian possums are marsupials & are either brushtails or ringtail.These are brushtails.Mrs poss has had twins & looked like a soccer ball walking along the paling fence before they left the pouch
The pouch opens vertically.Often just before the Joey ventures out of the pouch a paw is dangling out of the pouch.
Oh yeah, and they "play possom" to defend themselves. They truly lay on their sides and appear dead.
I think they are cutest little things! But I like American possums too.

Well, I'm glad that someone likes them. Our resident possums feast on my roses at every opportunity, climb onto the roof and soil the rainwater, have had night brawls outside my bedroom window, drive the dog crazy, leave trails like giant mice wherever they go and, generally, are liked a whole lot more when they stay away from the house area and in any one of the more distant gum trees on our property. I suppose your roof is possum-proofed - they can create havoc in a ceiling.

I'm originally from the southern U.S. and our possums aren't this cute not by a long shot. LOL! Interesting to see your local fauna, Chris. Australia has the best of the 'unusual' in the animal kingdom. I wish I could visit your country some day.

wow so darling, can see why you like them so much. Our u.s. possums are not quite so handsome, naked tails, pointed snouts, sharp teeth and nasty tempers. These look the opposite. Not to be crude but in Texas they call possums speed bumps! poor babies, they aren't very smart.
