Can YOU help? Can you make a simple child's quilt? I am excited beyond words! Two dear friends of ours, Andrea (who has worked mIracles with our son, Ben at camp) and Pavel are also involved in an orphanage in Uganda. Andrea and Pavel just got back from there where they (ugandaproject.com) provided simple mattresses for the bunk beds that before just had steel springs! I asked her if these 80 kids wouldn't also need a light-weight quilt to sleep under. Andrea checked with the director of the orphanage, who was ecstatic over the idea! Each orphaned child would have his or her own personal quilt to snuggle with forever! These kids have nothing -nothing! Andrea and Pavel will be going back in May and could hand deliver these quilts to these children - they would place each quilt directly in their arms! Although this is not officially a Christian orphanage, all the people who work there are, and all the songs they sings, and they pray to our Lord. We could embroider on them any message we want, and include a letter. Can YOU make one simple, lightweight quilt to be hand delivered to these kids? If you think you can, please PM me with your email address. I need to find 80 people who can make at least one quilt! Praise God for this opportunity! The quilts need to be about 48 x 60 inches, large crib size, and lightweight. We would need to use just a sheet for batting as it is always warm in Uganda. The quilt wouldn't need to totally cover the big kids, just mostly be for comfort.

They need to be lightweight, about 48 x 60 inches, and instead of using batting, we should use a sheet inside. They can be machine quilted, or tied - they do not need to be hand quilted. As they will not be washed often, they need to not show dust, so they should be medium colors, like tans and browns, medium blues, pinks, greens. Avoid white and black. Cats and dogs are wild, scary animals to these children, not cute pets, so we should avoid those. Instead goats and cows are much better, friendly animals. They do see giraffes and zebras as safe animals too. I would think lions wouldn't be good either. I would think farm theme would be fine......

Hi Michelle, I knew you'd help! The kids range in age from about a year and a half, up to early teens. We would need the quilts to arrive by the first of May to Andrea to pack to take with her to hand deliver them. The quilts should be two layers of cotton, with a sheet as batting, just the three layers. I can barely breathe! Medium colors, bright is great, not white or black as they would show dust easily. They would need to be mailed before the first of May to Colorado. They wouldn't even need to be pieced, but could be large pieces of novelty fabric joined with a sheet in between. Of course, they could be pieced, but these kids have nothing, absolutely nothing and would be thrilled to have any quilt to snuggle under. Just 48"x60" of love sent to them. We can embroider God Love Me, on them or do Noah's Ark as these children are in a Christian orphanage. Simple is good :-). Thanks, ro!

I would love to help! Our quilt guild just delivered 50 quilts/blankets to our local foster care orginization. Most won't be used for awhile and will just be stored. I was disappointed when I found that out as I had donated 20 at our last meeting and many more before that!

Andrea and Pavel went with the Uganda Project, which has helped some older orphans. Now, one of the older orphans, Patrick, has grown up and is following his calling, to support this orphanage. So, when Andrea and Pavel went there this January, that was where they were helping. We know those two through Adam's Camp, which is a special therapy camp for kids with special needs. OUr son, Ben, who is almost 24, has been to Adam's Camp more times than Adam! Andrea and Pavel have been incredible with Ben, who can be quite a challenge. So, we absolutely adore those two. When we heard they need sponsors to go to Uganda, we provided a little cash support. While they were there, they worked at the orphanage helping Patrick. The children didn't have mattresses on their bunk beds, so they sent out an SOS to supporters at home for $500 for basic mattresses. By the time we heard this, they already had what they needed. So, when they got home this week, I asked Andrea, if they needed some lightweight quilts for them, so each child could have one of his or her own. That's how this I got started. I immediately thought of Cuties!
We are up to 16 quilts now! That's just 64 more to go!

Hi Sarah, if this is your very first quilt, that one might be a bit complicated. A simple 8 inch squares sewn into an interesting array of 6 squares across by 7 or 8 squares down would be much easier for a beginner. You might want to save a more complicated design for later....

Another thing about the quilts... These children are not gender - ized. Boys can have pink, girls can have blue, boys can have flowers. So, truly, whatever you make can be loved by either boys or girls! Thanks so much! We have 17 quilts so far!

What about embroidering on a single bed sheet, then sewing another sheet to the back of it and doing some stippling in between the designs, would this be suitable?

You know, this sounds good in theory, it should work. But to be honest , it is really difficult to get these to come out right.
I have an easier idea. How about a "Rag quilt". It is a wonderful quilt for any beginner. There is no quilting at the end, and each block is made as you go. I'll get the directions for that kind and share it. They are really fun!

Pity. I think I could have done one this way, but I go in for major surgery in 2 weeks & won't be sewing again for at least 8 weeks after that.

A Simple Rag quilt! This is a really easy, and Fun way to make a simple quilt - great for your very first time! This is an excellent tutorial. You could make a quilt exactly as she shows, except since this is going to Uganda, on the equator, please us just cotton, not flannel. I also like to add a decorative stitch around the perimeter of the quilt to keep it extra secure for little fingers. We can add any designs we like to the little blocks before stitching them together. This quilt goes together fast and I think you will love doing them! We have 19 quilts now! The photo is of a cat quilt I made. I was adding a design after I had already stitched it, but the kitty didn't care... This one was flannel with batting.

Hi, I just "googled" uganda project.com. I watched this video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQQkEA5QnoACached It tells about the mattresses mentioned above. Very interesting and other videos mentioned on the side bar. It is very evident that the need is great. Could you check with Andrea or Pavel for the "likes" or needs of the children? Perhaps some small (and lightweight) item we could add along with the quilt. Thanks for any further insight you can add.

Aslo I count 63 ea 8 in blocks with 1/2 in seams to give 49x63 in Quilt using a raggy edge border. Me being a non quilter.

I used two layer of cotton & they are lightweight which will be good for Uganda. Once they are washed they will shrink up. I made my blocks 9 x 9 5 across & 5 down & after washing they came out 39 x 39 which will be good for the smaller children. Yours will be great for the bigger children. Rag quilts are so easy & fun even a non quilter can do one. Thanks for making a difference in a child's life.

I am with Linda, you and I are in the same boat, have never made a quilt before either, my question is when using fleece for the rag quilt it will not fray but how will that work for cotton, do you have to finish each edge, that seems like alot of work. Am I in left field here or what, maybe some of our experts can tell us,

For a rag quilt I would use 3 because 2 would not give you much of a rag effect.
You could always do a quilt as you go type quilt. Very easy.

I have made 3 little sun-dress so far to send with my quilts to Jan. Awhile back I happen to pick up some cute fabric at a 2nd hand store & in with the fabric was 3 little sun-dresses cut out. No pattern but was wondering what I was going to do with the dresses. A few days ago it hit me.

I am sorry I have just checked postage to send quilt to USA and the cheapest way is by sea and it takes 3 months and costs $70 or by air and it costs $96.50 and I cannot afford to post it. I am very sorry as I really wanted to helpRaelene

Oh my Gosh!! I had no idea it could cost that much! Oh Raelene, please don't feel badly. That cost is way too expensive for anyone! That is terrible! It shouldn't cost more than $10 to ship them priority within the us. That's just highway robbery! Please don't feel bad, we totally understand :-)

Thanks so much Michelle. I was guessing that a small light quilt wouldn't weigh more than a couple of kilograms at the most. And the time for airmail seems to be only up to 10 working days if I got that right.
I was wondering if they are really lightweight, how much do they weigh? When I order things from Australia from eBay the shipping is so reasonable...
I sent a card with an fsl bookmark to USA and it cost $10. So my reconing is Raels is on the ball :)
Don't forget we are being charged an additional fee of $9 for anything over one pound weight, to pay for The USA Government's charge for security screening.
I kid you not, this is fact and we discussed it here at length when the fee was brought in. It is a fee I really begrudge paying.

Raels I just checked on Auspost international calculator and 2kgs, Airmail to the USA came to $57.75 plus $9.00

Would it not be cheaper to send it directly to Uganda, maybe make arrangements with the orphanage to collect them until Andrea and Pavel return to distribute them all at the same time. Just checked this site and 1.5 - 1.75 kkgs was about $35.00.

Evidently the postal system somewhere getting to Uganda is not real reliable. Many packages disappear, and are never seen again. Andrea was concerned all our hard work might become stolen. We have someone who will pay the extra baggage charge to send the quilts on the same jet with Andrea and Pavel and they will hand deliver the quilts to the children. There is someone who is sending some US funds to help with postage also, so perhaps that could help with Aussie shipping also. I don't know how much that donation is yet. Thank YOu, Everyone!

We have 47 quilts promised for the orphans in Uganda now and it is still January! Many Cuties have offered to make a second quilt if needed! I totally understand the postage from Australia and South Africa, and probably places in Europe make this way too expensive for many Cuties. If you would like to send just the quilt top you have made, I have a couple of friends who will help me add a matching back and binding. That way, all you would need to send is just one layer. Truly, for any of you who really want to send a quilt, please consider this option :-) I'm as happy to help complete quilts for these kids, as you are to make them :-) If you have decided you cannot make and mail a quilt, and have not yet emailed me, please do, so I can keep track of what is coming. I cannot tell you how wonderful this is. I'm amazed at how many people who have never even sewn before, or made a quilt, have put their hearts into making these! If you haven't see the video - be sure to check it out. Imagine how they will be to have a quilt to go with those mattresses! Hugs of appreciation..... Jan

It is amazing how so many Cuties are helping with this project and we are well on our way to reaching the goal of 80 quilts. Cuties are helping in lots of ways, not just making quilts. Some have sent fabric, money for shipping, hand made dollies, pocket dollies, handmade pillowcase dresses, hand puppets, and lots of handmade treasures and games for these orphaned boys and girls. These children are being cared for in a safe place in a very dangerous part of the world. They had nothing, and we are helping to tell them someone in another part of the world cares, in a very unique way.
I know many Cuties, and many of my local friends, also give of their hearts, souls and pocketbooks to other causes, as do I. We just keep digging deeper. I appreciate so very much all the Cuties have done to support this project. It has been a blessing to me personally, and I think all Cuties who have contributed even in the tiniest way also feels great in the giving! Thanks sew much, and may God bless You all! Jan You make ME feel so good!
