It was popular back in 1930-1940's. My grandmother the first one that I seen make towels with Swedish emb.

I have done a bit of this too, but we call it Huck Embroidery. The material with the thread floats (that you pick up with the coloured thread) is called huckaback here in Australia. Yours are both too nice to choose between the two.
