I could probably find this out by reading my manual a little more closely, but I'd rather ask humans this--when doing a border, or anything else where you "Join" the designs to align, how do you figure and mark where to hoop?

I always print out the design and tape it with Scotch Tape to line up with the design just sewn. Make sure your printout includes the lines showing the centre vertical and horizontal lines. Hoop the fabric so where they intersect will be under the needle. I usually hoop up with tear-away and "float" the fabric in this case - it is easier to reposition.
