it was a bonnet for my doll.. and it was done on my mom's power machine she had from the shop.. she almost flipped when I told her I did it.. that was 60 years ago..and no I do not have that bonnet ..

well the first thing I can remember ever sewing was for my 2 girls. Matching skirts! Mint green with a pink bow and sashing all the way around. No pattern, it was a tube! they looked sew very cute in them until they went to sit down! Oh wait they couldn't, it really was a tube! Unfortunately we didin't find this out until they were getting in the car to go to a DO (probably Easter or Mother's Day) Don't remember how I fixed it but I'm a mom sew I'm sure that I did!

I started in 4-H with a hand made sewing box out of a cigar box - covered with fabric. Made the felt pincushion and needle holder! Then we started on the machine and of course the first project was a pillow cover! Thanks for the memories. Live Laugh Download Stitch!

mine was a two piece suit, jacket and skirt and yes I do still have it It is about 20yrs old and I still think it was the best thing I ever made. it is quite a fitted suit straight knee length skirt and short round neck jacket with frond fastenings.

It was a sun dress that I made for myself when I was 9. I can still see that fabric....kinda like gingham but not, with strawberries all over it.....I made one in blue and one in red....than I started making all my clothes, then later making my sister's and my clothes....and haven't stopped since, although I don't do a lot of clothes now...
I still keep 2 machines busy all the time.....
Later that year I started my first quilt top with my great-grandmother, sewing on her treadle machine using newspaper as the foundation for the odd fellow string quilt.....still have the top....

I remember putting a zipper in my Dads coat @8 years old and the praise he gave me is still with me today .Even though he and the coat have long gone.Being a daddy's girl had its pluses hugs Carilyn

Until I was about 10 years old fabric was ratoned and my mum would not let anyone use her precious materials, not even when using old dresses and coats. What I had to do was unpicking old clothes, basting what she'd cut out, hemming endless hems, overcasting seams, and so on. But I was allowed to make doll's clothes for my younger sister from leftovers of re-used materials.

The first thing that I had sew is a little dress for my first daughter when she has born, in 1956.In this time, few clothes were sold in the shops, and they were very expensive. I have given to her as a remember.

doll clothes,,,I was about 6, and I did them by hand from an old tee shirt....Nope don't have them any more.

The first thing I can remember was sewing small 2x2 inch squares together with my grandmother for a quilt. She called it "piecing." She evidently put it in a quilt and no I don't have it. The first think I ever made on my own with no help was a dress for our oldest daughter when she was about 1. It had puff sleeves, wide sash, peter pan collar, and full gathered skirt and as I had no machine at the time I sewed it all by hand. Our second daughter wore it, too but by the time she came I had a small (very small) Singer. No I do not still have it.

How well I remember my first real sewing project after school. My grandmother was in the hospital after surgery and wanted warm night gowns so I bought a pattern and made her several flannel gowns. They turned out so nice and she loved them. She was a wonderful seemstress and made dance costumes for a lot of the local dance studios here. I learned a lot from her and miss her..

The first thing I remember sewing on my own was a pink and white checked Gingham dress. I stitched it on Mom's old Singer (treddle) machine. I was ten years old at the time. Don't know whatever became of the dress. Sure wish I still had the old Singer

My first item was at School in class I made a skirt for my school uniform.

The first thing I remember is a dress for my barbie...I kept all the seams together with tape.LOL
When I was a little older I made a Santa, it was one of those panel pattersn, cut and sew. It was a school assignement. The only thing was when growing up we didn't have alot of money. I had to stuff my Santa with the little stuffing my mom could find around the house and I used old tape recorder tape. It was a little cruchy but I got an A and I still have it today. It's close to 50 years old. :)))

Making my jeans into bell bottoms, lol! No I don't have them anymore. You opened the outside seam up as high as you wanted to add material in, sometime almost to the knee if you wanted Elephant ears, and got some handkerchief material and hand stitched it in on both legs.

The first thing I recall was an apron while in 4H. I don't have it but it taught me making clothes was not my favorite kind of sewing. I prefer quilting and My son still has the first one I ever made-mistakes and all.

1955 A sundress for myself, from feed sacks that my grandmother gave me. I even remember the color was a green print and white print and the pattern was a newspaper one my aunt cut out for me. My baby was a yr. old and I was 16 yrs. old./Lillian

I made my own School Uniform when I was 11 years old.

At 13 I learned how to make dress patterns using my own measurements. The first garment I have made was a simple, fitted summer shirt (?) for myself, with no sleeves and no collar. It fitted perfectly and I was proud of it. My father was a bit concerned because the garment was too close to my body and asked my mother why I had made it that way. The reason was that I had learned to design the bodice that way! LOL

I remember what but have to guess when...I would have been about 11 or almost, other 2 sisters 13 and 15. Mom bought a bolt of plisse(maybe mispelled)She gave us a gown pattern and told us she wanted us all to make our own nightgowns.If we did need any advice, she would instruct us, but we were to make it ourselves. Well, my oldest sister and I made ours and I do believe, still to this day, that my middle sister would have slept naked, if Mammma had not made hers! haha She never did learn any craft.My grandmother and her sisters made quilts and we watched and played under them.My mamma sewed,too. The first things I made were my dolls clothes. I must have been very young. My mother and grandmother made all their own clothes and mine too. My daughter still has one of my dolls with the clothes I made. The first thing I made for myself was a straight skirt with a matching waistcoat. I had no pattern - I just cut. I thought it looked great!!! My mother said it was far too tight :)

I was about 4, and sewed a bunch of pillow cases for my mom. I'm sure she showed me how. I'm sure she put them to use, but I really don't know which ones I did. She would start big 'project' days and pull me aside (I'm the 2nd of 6) to work with her. Well, there weren't six when I was 4, were there? I would have been 2nd of 4 at that time. I digress, sorry. Pillowcases at 4 and I haven't a clue where they are.
