I used the craft foam from Joann's. All I've used it on are hat designs so far. The foam wasn't anything special. Just what they have in crafts section. Didn't use any special needle. This was a few years ago. Maybe there is something different out there to use now and special guidelines.

your designs should give you some info on what form of foam craft to buy - I just used the kind that is in the craft store - when I did something with it - turned out fine - did nothing special.

I have done flowers and leaves and they all had a satin stitch edging that was able to piece the foam so it tore away easily. It looked great with only one flower in the bouquet done with foam. I've done animals, too. All must have satin stitching which will cut the foam. Hope this helps. Try a sample.

Any design you get will have instructions or you could check EmbLibrary.com or some of the other sites.

The designs have been specially digitized for the foam. You will find that they don't have any stitches (or very few) going through the foam so as not to mash it down. The stitches will be around the edges and probably a little more dense satin stitches. The needle piercing the foam allows it to be easily pulled away around the outside for a clean look. I bought the thinnest foam I could find. Even the thinnest gives a very plump appearance when completed. I am interested to see what thickness others used.

I love the results I get using the foam under the large letters that are satin stitched. They raise up real nice and look good.I use the craft foam that walmart sells and it does the same as the more costly kind supposedly just for machine embroidery. Also use the regular needle I use to embroider the design with , never a problem.

I have used the foam on a sweatshirt for my grandson. It was for some letters and I used the same colour foam as the thread and it was great and has been machine washed a number of times and is still as good
