Build more shelves. (ha ha ha) :)

Oh my goodness. I'd have to hire a professional to do mine. lol I would have no idea where to start. Mine isn't organized but I know where it all is. lol Hope someone here has some good ideas for you....

have computer conection lines (if not wlan) or music, tv, telephone so you do not have to run all trhough the house and enought plugs and security for the plugs if all machines and the iron run at once.

one small coffee table alllllways clutter free to put a cupa

try to find an orga system before you buy storage cabinets or shelves

I have to agree with the rest, power surge multi outlets, phone, entertainment of some sort, shelves and clear totes. Mind you, I have a corner and use an over the toilet shelf unit that sits over my computer tower, LOL!

Buy old dressers. I have two in my sewing room. One is about 5.5 feet long and I had a counter top cut to fit it and that is for my cutting table. The other one is shorter, and I cut a 2'x 4.5' pc of plywood and covered that with 2 layers of quilt batting and made a muslin cover over that for my iron board. I screwed both tops onto the dressers to hold in place. The dressers were the old blond wood, I painted them to match the rest of the room, and I have TONS of drawers for storage under them. I would take photos but my sewing room is a mess...LOL

Since mine is a disorganized mess, lol! I would have to give you my wish list, lol! I have an old TV sitting in the corner that takes up lots of space and is much to heavy for me to move. It works fine but I find it as a distraction more than anything else! #1 would be to remove it, but where to put it is the other problem, lol! In its place I would put a floor to ceiling bookshelf for storing my books and patterns on. That would free up some closet space so I could get bins of fabric in the closet close at hand. Right now most of its in the basement in storage bins, out of sight out of mind, lol! Another thing I need to do is catalog what I DO Have for material to begin with, probably on recipe cards in a recipe card box. I need more shelves to store things on or in and less stuff to store, lol! I also need to rearrange it so its more functional, just haven't figure out how as of this point. Maybe if I move the TV to the corner next to the heat register and the sewing table where the TV is now it would be more functional in itself. As the main sewing table is sort of in a corner kind of hard to excess at the moment. Oh dear, now I've got something else to think about and distract e while I'm trying to get projects done, lol!
I hope you get lots of good answers, I need some ideas myself, lol!

My advice--make a plan before you dive in and organize. I tend to get sidetracked if I don't plan first. Figure out how you need to place your machines for your ease of use. Set those up first, including electrical outlets and things. Then decide what kind of storage you prefer--bins or shelves or drawers or whatever, and the type of categories you are going to have. For example, will you categorize your fabric by color or by its intended use, like reds or velvets, etc. Same way with notions and patterns and such. Mind you, this is how I would do it--everyone has to make up their own method that works for them. Sewing and embroidering is such a personal thing--your space has to be able to work for you, and it doesn't matter if someone else has a different opinion.

I have 4 dressers in my sewing room, my husband painted them all yellow for me and you'd think they came as a set they look so nice. Shelves, drawers, containers, all that. We have so many supplies we need them organized or we won't have a clue when we need them. Everyone thinks differently so I'm guessing they organize differently too.

Have either a notebook or excel file to record what drawer you put something in. I get "organized" and then swear I put something in a particular place. sigh. Used to be able to find anything.

Maintain your flexability. I reorganize to some extent, every time my sewing area spills over into our living room. Each time I think I have hit upon the solution.... yet I keep adjusting.

Making do with odds and ends is probably not helping. If you can afford to do so, it would most likely be beneficial to purchase dedicated storage devices.... not just what the kids left behind.

I would ask her what is organization??? Mine certainly could use it. I need to hire someone. LOL Mary

I have my Artista with all my embroidery cottons on one table overlooking the ocean. I have to move a built in cupboard to the other side of the room, so that I can move all my machines to one area. Then I have to add a new built in cupboard with enough shelves/drawers in to store all my materials. Both husband and me were really sick - me with chemo, and still going on for two more weeks, and he with inflamation in all the joints and back - so my room looks really terrible at the moment, and I don't know where everything is, since it is so disorganised. Sympathies to you for the choices that you have to make, but still I hope that you will enjoy having some ideas of what you can do. Lovies.*****

Don't move anything. You will never find it again. When company comes, simply close the door to your sewing room. I put my seasonal fabric in clear plastic bins last year and now I can't find my St. Patrick's day fabric. Christmas, Valentine, 4th of July and Halloween are all stacked neatly, but St Paddy is missing. Kay

i have a very small sewing room so i have to take advantage of every space. i have shelves in the closet and i use baskets for different types of material and projects. most of my thread racks are on the wall and some is in drawers. i use an office desk for one of my embroidery machines. i also have a long table that i use for small cutting job and another machine on it. my stablizer is on paper towel holders at the other end of the table. i have a smaller machine in a sewing cabinet and a serger beside it. also have a computer on the desk.

Buy containers/tubs/boxes and then make the shelves to fit them so you don't lose space. ALSO,, STOP buying fabric that you don't use. LOL

Shelves, shelves, shelves... clear plastic containers... jump in and do it. LOL! I just recently had the 'organizing' bug... like, just a few days ago. I had to get my DH to help move a couple of pieces of furniture out of the room. It looks a lot better, but I'm not really done yet. I've got plastic totes and clear plastic bags of fabric/material for projects on the back burner. They are not in here in my workroom... yet.

GO VERTICAL. Lots of shelves of every size. Thread racks on the wall. Cans of all sizes taped together make great containers on desktops. You really don't have to spend a lot of money. To get ideas check out magazines, the internet, or store displays. When you see things you like ask yourself could you make something like that with what you already have? One day I walked into a army surplus and found the perfect cutting table a( display case) being thrown away.

I have a friend that is a professional organizer and I will not even let her in my room,lol. But I have been thinking myself of how to make things better. I did 1/2 of the closet myself with shelf's and it has helped. Put my fabric in the to keep out of light. Have been thinking of making shelf's on one wall to store baskets or clear containers. Just make sure they are square so they don't waste space. that is how far I have gotten so far I saw something I liked I am going to try to down load it to show you,I think wheels would be nice on them to roll around. I have a few, As many shelves as possible, clear square plastic containers with lids, clear plastic draws on wheels.Place to organise and store your threads, out of sun light and away from dust.Must have work tops.
Think this will help a lot.

I am the last person to give advice, as I have just a sewing corner for my machines. I use the spare bedroom cupboard to store all my threads and material. Lack of space I am afraid. When people come to stay I have to move everything out of the cupboards. A real pain. LOL
