includes everything from fabric,notions & embroidery supplies, threads cd's & everything else. anything that you think might help!

Buy old dressers. I have two in my sewing room. One is about 5.5 feet long and I had a counter top cut to fit it and that is for my cutting table. The other one is shorter, and I cut a 2'x 4.5' pc of plywood and covered that with 2 layers of quilt batting and made a muslin cover over that for my iron board. I screwed both tops onto the dressers to hold in place. The dressers were the old blond wood, I painted them to match the rest of the room, and I have TONS of drawers for storage under them. I would take photos but my sewing room is a mess...LOL

an organized sewing room? organization is for people who don't like looking for things....lol
If you want it organized... stay out of it lol NOT!!! Hubby visits once in a while to see how messy.... but knows what come from the mess!!

I use clear containers with lids.I can stack them on selves & see can whats inside.Each box is full of similar items .

If she had a lot of fabric, then get milk crates (or the store version of them) to stack up along the wall, several layers deep. Lay them so that they create a bookshelf type horizontal surface. Roll each piece of fabric, and place it in the crates, so that they are somewhat grouped by colors. Then she could see what she had at a glance. A nice sheet, curtain or privacy screen could go in front to keep the fabric nice and clean. Once organized, she would be ready to sew without having to dig through bins and boxes and drawers and piles to get to that perfect piece.

I like drawers for my fabrics as I can fold them and place them on edge, one behind the other, like a card filing system.

Since I don't have any drawers here yet, I purchased 2 stacks of plastic drawers in stands.
I ditched the stands and slid the drawer sections onto shelves (inside my cupboards), with labels on the front of each drawer.
Now I just pull out the drawer I need and can see at a glance the fabric I want.
I'd take photo's but it's all downstairs and I'm upstairs, maybe tomorrow, if I remember. :-)

I think we fall into two groups. The highly organised and those who dont. I have too much stuff for my sewing room and dont want to part company with anything because I might need it. Stuff gets shuffled round the room and I knw where most of it is. My sewing room is for me only and my husband visits infrequently. His work areas are highly organised and I can put my hand on whatever I need to borrow. I just have to make sure I return all the borrowed stuff as soon as I have used it.

I am not very organised. My workroom needs and extra built in cupboard with shelves only. Would love that I will be able to get to my materials at a glance.

I'm planning to get a portable closet from walmart to add dust free storage for fleece on bolts etc. Maybe add those long shoe hanging units to store smaller items.

Nothing makes my heart go pitter patter more than a well organized anything!!

My husband just redid my closet in my sewing room.. I have a lot of clear containers so it does not take me that long to find things. I also have Ikea shelving units with storage containers for all my cotton fabric. My fleece are in plastic bins. I quess I have to much but it was almost all on sale..

Here are photos of the containers which have beads ,lace & other stuff in the cupboards.The shelves have a slight curve because of the weight of the beads .Fabric is kept in draws & plastic boxes.Sm boxes are empty Ferrore Rocher choc boxes

I am too lazy for that job if I could afford to I would hire someone to do it for me LOL

I am attempting to organize. Unfortunately part of my stuff is in my husbands man cave because he wants me to sew near him.... part of my stuff is in my so called dining room - thats really only got sewing buckets in it and the other portion is in my office.

Here's what is working... I have clear buckets that are labeled. I actually label them on the inside so the labels dont come off. I use those holders for name badges (with the strings that go around your neck) and tape one to the inside of each bucket - then if I change what goes in the bucket - I just cut a new piece of paper and slide it in there. Even my beads and laces and ribbons and zippers have their own bucket. I used clear return address labels to label my tiny bead containers.

I removed my closet door and added wire shelving. I actually put 2x4s on the walls and the wire shelving is sitting on top of the 2x4s the wrong way - the lip faces up instead of down - it holds my small buckets in so they don't fall off when I'm climbing for something. Now my medium sized buckets are on my wall - well they will be when I finally get them filled. They are approximately 12" deep and so are the shelves I put up. 2x12x10s are really cheap - so I bought 2 and they run the length of my office. The expensive part was the stupid triangle things to hold up the wood. When it gets warm I'll paint the wood to match my room.

I also have furniture in my office - but I find that the drawers are too little to be functional and the dresser tops just get cluttered with crap that I should put away but don't. All my stabilizer is in the drawers - but I want to get rid of the furniture and replace it with bookcases.

It is a little pricey for plastic bins - but I just buy a couple at a time and then it doesn't seem so terrible.

I also built a peg board for my embroidery threads. You know the board that has holes in it? I bought dowel rods that fit in the holes and then cut it to about 2" each. Then I glued dowels into the holes so that my threads fit nicely spaced apart.

I'll clean a bit tomorrow and then send pics along.
