When I asked about organizing your sewing room sewfrenzie mentioned cataloguing, I'm guessing this is like taking inventory? Can someone explain it a little more for me, she mentioned recipe cards, I'm close to getting this but now I am stuck!

Haven't been here much lately so I don't know the original post. I have a lot of drawers in my craft room stuffed with stuff. I found it easier to take my camera and take pictures of the contents. Have a folder on my computer called WHERE IS. I don't like putting labels on drawers since I reorganize too often when I add to my stash.

Cataloguing is making a list of your things & where they are located..can also add any information you may need. Suggest you set it up in a file system you understand...my hubby & I always file things under different tabs! Some use a 3 ring note book with written or typed pages in doc. holders, again arranged the way you can find what you want! Others, the recipe or note cards that fit in a box of that size & have alph. dividers. You can update as you need. Saves having to search thru everything to find that one thing you need right then!! However, this is NOT to say I've done that! My sewing room is such a mess & also have things in the garage & anywhere else I can find an empty spot! I need more room!!

Gerry pretty much covered it. With my fabrics I cut a small piece of the edge and staple it to the recipe card. Than I write a brief description because the swatch doesn't always show all that's on the design. I also put the fabric width and how many inches or yards I have. I have my fabrics sorted my fabric type and color so it would state something like....in the blue cottons bin on the card. When I use some of the fabric I remeasure what I have left, say a yard and a half and write that on the card, if I use it all I pull the card from the box or write used all and put it in the back of the box. In the same recipe box on several cards I have each of my children and grandchildren's information, favorite colors, sizes, interests, ages and measurements. It helps when I need to make an outfit or quilt for them. I have something like 30 + bins of material, so I need some sort of idea what I have. I have been trying extremely hard NOT to buy anymore material , and just use up what I have, lol!
Wish me luck!!
