I have been sewing (dressmaking) for years and I have always used no steam when ironing on interfacing. I have recently bought a new pattern where there are lots of tips given. It tells me to use steam when ironing on interfacing. I have just tried and have had good results. What do other Cuties do? Sarah.

I don't do alot of sewing and using interfacing - but it the package said to use steam - that is what I would do, as well - sounds like they are using more and more these days rather than not. Thanks for sharing about this Sarah.

There a some fusibles that do not like steam, other than that should not be a problem it is just polyester, which can melt with an too hot iron!

I always use the European Vilene. Some of them have instructions printed on the edge and they vary.
On vilene 220 is printed: 12 sec damp cloth.
Vilene 180 (which is thinnerhas washing instructions (40C), settings for ironing (2 dots) and 8 sec.
And the G785 (a thin stretch one) has only the setting(2 dots) and washing instructions(30C).
I try to follow their instructions.

Thank you Martine - I had to smile to myself as my fabric shop only sell 2 types of 'Vilene', thick and thin. No writing on them, pretty sure they come from China - terrible quality.

I also use steam wherever and whenever I can. I have almost always used it on interfacings and have never had a problem.

I steam the interfacing first to preshrink it. Then use a damp cloth while ironing.

Well I'm the odd one out again .. I don't even put water in my iron lol so no steam. However I use a Rajah cloth so if I want to I can turn the iron hotter and not worry about burning/scorching most things :) xXx

I do like to use steam on most fabrics to make it iron more nicely - can't stand those hard to iron out creases - but I also use a fine spray bottle with distilled water and that works well.
I like sewmom's idea, though, because I have had crinkly fabric after ironing on some interfacings. I'll be pre-shrinking any interfacing I use in future.
