I would just use regular fabric, like a dishtowel. No need to use Aida cloth.

Cross stitch designs do not need anything special. They are usually a little more dense but they sew out beautifully on towels as well as tea towels. Please post your towel when finished. Hugs Sarah.

I have done some xs on towels and they look great! Just hoop as you would for normal embroidery! Here are a couple I have done! they wash well too! Hugs Sally

Cross stitch was invented long befor Aida fabric! Traditionally it is worked by counting the threads on even weave fabrics such as linen. You machine doesn't need threads to count to keep it neat so stitch on any fabric you like!
PS You can do hand cross stitch on towels etc by using a water soluble canvas on top of the fabric. This disappears just like WSS!

Hi, machine embroidery X stitch is made for any type of fabric.

But, I have also seen them stitched on aida cloth, this makes for a wonderful "cheated' hand emboidery look. The fabric is very expensive though.
