Hi Chris, I would say 18 in. and leave an opening for adjustments. I would say it is about the same as a 4 year old girl, I think you are close to that! lol. Live Laugh Download Stitch!

Thanks Chris - wow! 18 inches - I think Scarlett O'Hara's was that small in Gone with the Wind! Yes, I have a 4 year old GD, but can't get hold of Dana's family - they must be out - stinking hot here today. Love Chris

Chris, I would figure their little bodies might be smaller than the usual 4 year old boy. Just a thought. Hugs to you!! Laura*

I was thinking along your lines Laura - they would be underweight I would think. I don't know size because Ophelie has such a big tummy and she's only 2!!!!! Love Chris

If he is:
Regular: 22 - 22 1/2"
Slim:20 - 20 1/2"
Plus:24 1/2 - 25 1/2
Husky:24 1/2 - 25 1/2
I think I would do much smaller than these!

I've made it 19 inches and hopefully that will fit a small child. Love Chris

well I have a suggestion: my 2 oldest gdkds are really skinny sew when I make them anything with elastics in them I buy the ones with the button holes in them that way they can re-adjust the size to fit!Hugs Loralye

I didn't have any of that type of elastic. So I used the really wide one and hope that this will suffice. Thanks Loralye, love Chris

There is elastic with buttonholes in it. I leave a little gap inside the waistband where I place a button so it is adjustable. BUT, then you have to worry about being sued if a child choked on a button that fell off. So I only do it for my kids and older people.

I've seen this sort Sewmom, but unfortunately don't have any. Sounds like a great idea. I'll have to buy some. Love Chris
This is such a good idea. I forgot that!

A lot of the sites doing dresses for Africa have the britches. Here is one site.
It might help someone interested.

Hi Chris - I have in front of me a dressmaking book. Standard 4 yr old waist measurement is apparently 22 inches (56cm). Standard chest measurement for 4year old is 23.5 inches (60cm). I hope this helps. Coral

Yikes, I've made it 18 once finished and in place. Love Chris
that's probably a good size, children there may be a little thinner...but I did dlothing for my little niece and used 20 inches, my granddaughter is 11 years old and her waist is 23 inches....she is 5'3 but kind of thin...
Probably a good size as the little boys over there are possibly smaller than average...hugs sally

I've posted a picture in PROJECTS. Maybe a smaller boy will get them than a 4 year old! Love Chris

Could you put a drawstring through instead? That way it could be adjusted but I guess I'd sew through the back of the casing with the drawstring inside so it doesn't come out.

Chris, I'm sure there will be a little boy who needs a pair of short EXACTly the size you made them! Thank you for them! I can't even imagine the excitement Patrick, the director, is going to have when he receives our quilts, dolls, puppets and goodies! Now I'm going to peek at them in Projects!

olly's information may work for the average child, but is the child from Uganda thinner than average? I had a child I had to always but elastic in the slim jeans or they would fall down. In that case you can make the pattern for a four year old but use the wasit measurement for a 3 year old.

For info such as this I sometime look at an old pattern, they have this type of stuff on the back.
