Hey has anyone else noticed the flags on today's sailing ship are flying in the wrong direction? The wind fills the sails from behind......

You know Meg, I'm not sure... the design isn't too clear. Guess I'd need to stitch it out. :-) Have a blessed morning (or where you're at, evening) friend.

True, but maybe it would make it look funny if is was going in the correct direction?

May be true - but, it is still a lovely stitch out, and it is given to us as a gift. ("Don't look a gift horse in the mouth.") Old Texas saying. *4U Sue

truth be told, I never download ones that aren't of interest to anyone I could make them for. So even though I voted for it, it was not because i wanted it, but to help someone else who did. I just love voting the freebies for everyone else, makes me feel helpful. hugs n roses, M

If you have a computer program, you could flip it the other way.

They are Lady (Cocker Spaniel) & Mishka (Himalayan) in front, both 8y.o. & my 14 y.o. Tidge (Burmese cross) in back. I have one other named Spanky, (Russian Blue) who is a 2y.o. rescue cat but sadly i have to keep them separate as he is too vicious. They are my "kids" and I love them with all my heart. hugs n roses, M

I know about kids like that I have 2 schnauzers and they rule the house!

OOH i love schnauzers, i was going to get one, then my 2nd DH died & i took his little girl Lady when none of his daughters wanted her. I am an animal "fan"atic & these 3 even sleep in our bedroom, 2 in our bed, Lady in her own bed on the floor beside me as close as she can get. hugs, M

The flags may actually not be wrong. You can not sail directly into the wind, but you can zigzag into the direction of the wind, and the boat will create its own force on the flag by its forward motion. (Think of a horse's mane flying backwards as he runs.)

Neat little drawing and brief explanation here:

Flags are quite often depicted as flying behind the vessel and that is only possible when you are motoring. Even 17th and 18th century oil paintings have their flags wrong. Sailing into the wind is not possible, the angle between the apparent wind (that is the wind direction corrected for the headwind created by the ship's speed) and ship is often at least 40 degrees. A square rigged ship like the ones in the embroideries has to make an even greater angle. So you are right the flags ARE flying in the wrong direction. But it's still a nice design. Flower for you.

stitch out the ships then when doing the flags, turn your embroidery machine around to face the other direction. That should fix it. Oh, love your cat, is it a burman?
