Hi Cuties, My turn to ask about which software to buy. I know it's been asked before but until you need to do it yourself it doesn't always make complete sense. I've been blessed with a new computer that has Windows 7. I have been told that my PE Design 5.0 might corrupt the computer. I could look at the PE Design Next which will upgrade me to version 8. I could look at PE Design Plus. Or I could look at other brands. Embird? I have not looked at prices yet either. I am not changing machines. I have a Brother ULT2003 D which reads up to pes 5.6. Any opinion are appreciated.

By the way you may have heard about me being on my "other computer". And you may say, "How many computers does this lady have?" Well, I usually work on the old desk top which has been the family computer for years.... and is very old and slow. It takes way too long to do my daily freebie list for me and you while trying to download at the same time. My kids got new computers over the years so I sometimes use a hand me down of my daughter's, faster but also broken in a few spots. So this new computer is actually my first new computer for myself. DH thought I deserved it and is open to new software so I better hurry before my luck changes. My local dealer has software on sale in April too! Maybe with a faster system I'll get more sewing done.

I just got a new laptop last week also. But hubby and I both have our own laptops and desktops. So, 4 computers for 2 people. Hugs..Carol

I have a desktop (that's what I'm on right now - it has a 22" screen, my hubby has a desktop - both of which are XP home. And then I have a laptop that I got from an old boss when they sold the business - again XP home, then I got a laptop with my sew/emb. machine (it only gets used for emb.) - which is vista and now when we just changed service providers for our home phone/internet/tv, we got a laptop for switching - which is windows 7. So, we now have 5 computers and 2 people.

I bought a Windows 7 laptop last year. I've always used Embird and love it. I love that I don't have a dongle to deal with - ever! Since it's downloadable, all I need to worry about keeping are the 'keys' and they get emailed to me and you can save them as a txt or an insertable file into embird. The upgrades are very reasonable. I just 2 version upgrade as I was stilling running Embird 2004. I write my designs to my ULT and smaller Brother machine using a Vikant Ultimate Box. The Ultimate Box isn't compatible with Windows 7 so I'm going to use my old laptop in my sewing room with my box to write designs. You can still write to a floppy if you have an external one for your laptop. I'm not going to bother updating the software on my old laptop. Embird doesn't tell you what version of PES it reads or which version it is but I've found it usually reads all but maybe the latest version of PES available. It's not been an issue for me. You can load the program onto 2 computers for the same price. I've always bought it at www.secretsof.com because they discount it and you also get to choose a bonus set of designs with a $30 purchase. There are quite a few Embird Yahoo groups where you can get free tutorials and help. You can download the program for free, use it for up to one month/100 times opening/closing the program. The iconizer is wonderful and allows you to see thumbnails of your designs in your Windows folders. Worth the $18.50 for it. Needless to say, I'm a fan. If you need more info, you can email me. A good friend of mine is a techie. She played with a lot of programs (PE Design, Artista, Generations etc) and she prefers Embird.

Hi Lori, I read this once and I'm going to have to re-read it. It sounds like a lot of things you have going on there. The iconizer I've heard about and I know I'll need that. My current system uses jpegs which windows 7 won't show in folders complete
But, alas, I'm off to go see The Hunger Games. I can't believe I'm not waiting for it to come out on Netflix which I usually do.
Boy, I was re-reading what I wrote and it appears some of the text was deleted. I paid $43 for a 2 version upgrade, which I thought was very reasonable. :)
Mehhouse..if you have ULT machine & it uses floppy diskette, you can just copy the design icon to the disk and the machine recognizes it--you will see the thumbnail. I have 2 little portable floppy drives that cost abt $12 ea...it is quicker and also gives me back up of designs. The diskettes can be erased and used over and over, if you want to do that. I LOVE the options with the Brother ULT--even tho one of mine is suffering "lockjaw" right now.

My laptop runs windows 7 and I've just purchased Embird + iconiser... love it. Next I want to get the digitizer & learn to make my own designs :)

Sewmom, you have exactly what I have--machine and software. You absolutely CAN use P E v5 with 7...go to the Bro site and download the 7 update. I don't think it works with a 64bit processor tho. There will be info and instructions how to proceed. V5 is an excellent program and will do almost everything you want to do. So save your money!

Uh Oh, Are making me lose my excuse to buy something newer and better? LOL. I will look into it but I didn't think there was an update all the way up to 7 when I looked the first time.

I use the digitizer because I have a Janome, but also use Embird. It is free for a month to try and if you don't like to buy it is also to find somewhere on the net like a lot of other programs. I like both but because I'm used to digitizer and have not much time to sort embird out. I will do soon because find it quite easy to use. Good luck with it.

I just purchased PE Design Next and am reading the manual! It has so many neat features! I am learning to digitize, so I am very excited about the capacity and potential of this program. I reviewed Embird, but decided to go with PE Design as it is an all-in-one approach. I received a tutorial program when I purchased the program from my retailer, and so far, it is an excellent assistant!

The Ultimate box software IS compatible with Windows 7. When I upgraded to a new laptop, I just loaded the Ultimate software without thinking about a possible problem and it worked. Did take a bit to find the install key number, of course, after some years. I do have the USB version, so not sure about the older parallel port version. Have a Viking Rose if that makes a difference. I use it all the time to look at the files of designs on my disk as well as to write the card for the machine. Good luck on whatever you choose.
