Most designs are set for a certain size and the general rule is not to enlarge or shrink by more than 10-15%. Free Standing Lace generally does not work well when the size is changed at all. Using computer software can help with resizing some - because it can adjust the density. Most machines just adjust the size of the stitches and not the density so it is less "nice" (or if you resized a bunch - it may turn out just plain bad). I doubt it is the machine but more the design resizing that caused your issues.
