Question of the Day: Today I thought we might share one of our favorite gadjets; something that was originally for something else but works well in our sewing rooms!
My gadjet is a mini wallpaper roller it rolls the creases out of the seams! I use it as a perfect mini iron to roll the crease in fabric! It works like a charm! I think they cost about $2. @ the hardware store I have a ribbon on it to hang it up when I'm not using it

& here's an easy one, a bag of pipe cleaners from the Dollar store, great for getting into those hard to reach places when cleaning your sewing machine!

Never thought of them! We have become so politically correct that Wal-Mart doesn't label them as pipe cleaners--they are "chenille stems" I'll always call them pipe cleaners, though!
they do call them pipe cleaners on the cigarette aisle,chenille stems in the crafts dept.
wow I guess I am just old I have never called them anything but they do say pipe cleaners on the pk & I bought them @ the $ store
yeh we call them old things pipe cleaners too & thats another great idea

it saves me getting up & down when working on a quilt!you have to press gentle on ever seam & that can take forever! Sew this is super handy!

I love your idea of the wall paper roller, I will get one asap.
I use dental floss threaders to thread the loopers on my serger. I also use a "gutted" bic pen as and extension for my thread spools, so I can use cone thread on my machines.

the gutted bic pen - and here I thought I was unique - I used one of these for the last 30 yrs on my old machine (not embroidery) and made sure my DIL knew what it was for although I doubt she'll ever need it as she really only does repairs - works good.
wow this is a great idea! I use a pickle jar for large spools of thread I have for over 30 yrs!

I use an old letter opener for an awl ( to push material under the feed when I need to) ..... sewed through my finger one too many times! LOL

I use an empty medicine (pill) bottle to put all my used needles in. that way no one will get hurt when I get rid of them. Hugs, Mary

I use my empty pill bottles for my extra bobbins. I haave one for empty bobbins and One for full. I have alongarm machine, when quilting I need several bobbins all the same to complete the quilt. This keeps them altogether for me.
I too put used/broken needles in a pill bottle which is passed on to my daughter (a nurse) to get rid of at work safely
good idea - Made me realize I don't have to put mine into something extra as my hubby is diabetic, he has a container for disposing of his needles and I can just use that! Thanks.

I use a Dime to undo screws in my face plate to clean the bobbin area of the machine.

Dimes work on the screw that holds the foot shank - I used to have a machine that sometimes when I needed needed to take it off, I couldn't find the screwdriver, but could always find a dime.
I usually use a quarter. It's a little bigger and easier for me to handle.

just makes it easier for me when I need it I hang as much as I can! I leave things in pk if they have a clip onit sew that I can rehang stuff

I have an oval magnetic disk that is supposed to be used on your desk for paperclips. I use it for my straight pins. It's easier than pushing them into a pincushion when I'm sewing. Also they don't spill and if I do drop any, I just scan this magnet over the carpet and the pins jump onto it. Very handy. Hugs, Susan

I use a magnetic door clip for this. I have thread through the screw holes so it can be dangled about the floor to pick up and dropped pins.

I use my Mums old vase full of pebles from holidays, with a BBQ skewer handle stuck in the vase and bent to the right hight at the back of my machine to hold all my big cotton reels ( I have loads of big reels left from my business,)please dont look at my cutting out table it had to be huge to hold the rolls of uphlstery fabric.

Hardware stores,dollar stores and even Harbour Freight if you have one nearby are great places to pick up gadgets to use in your sewing room. Cheaper too than the fabric or quilting shops. I use plastic cake holders from walmart for my threads,they are just the right height,they stack and have lids and the handles snap down to close. See through as well. Keep an open mind and see what you come up with.

when I sew using a large spool of thread that won't fit on the spool (which I never use) I use this little guy he is a garden critter stake that dh attached a wooden base too & for the small thread I put them in a pencil holder from the $$$ store & the pickle jar is for the large spools the bigger the spool the bigger the jar! LOL as I have said before I have used the pickle jar for over 30 yrs & it is great & very stable! & the garden stake is just plain cute!

I use the bottom of a 100 pack DVD/CD holder after I emtpy it to make design back-up CD's as a thread spool holder as you see it will hold any size spool. I put it behind my embroidery machine and loop in through my extra high thread holder attached to my machine. Or you could set it on the floor like some do with a spool in a cup. I also think if you save the clear plastic top you could melt a hole in the top and thread the thread through it and that way it would work on the floor and keep the spool clean & safe.

My favourite gaget is a monitor for my embridery machine it has been adapted from the baby monitor. When my machine stops or runs out of thread or thread break it beeps and tells me to go back to check my machine. I can even visit my neighbour and know if anything is happening to my machine. Most handy when doing FSL. It was invented by Gary of Echidna Embroidery Club. Hugs Joyce

Gadget No.2. i use a Metal Coffee mug stand to hang my many pairs of scissors on.Keeps them up off the sewing table and I can find them easily. DH is forbiden to touch them of corse. Bought him his own set for his office. Hugs Joyce

Boy oh boy what good ideas. My pill container for needles hubby drilled a hole in cap so I don't have to use crippled hands to emove child roof cap just drop neede down hole. Holds quite a few and also broken needles.

I never thought of putting holes in the top of pill bottle for needles what a good idea. I always say to get the top off child proof bottles Give them to the kids they are the only ones who can remove them us oldies cant. Hugs Joyce

Just wanted to share this, I went to an upmarket home store and they had some very beautiful china plates displayed on a wooden rack. The assistant was changing the display and I happened to notice the rack and immediately saw all my cottons standing neatly arranged for the design Im working on. This gentleman saw my eyes light up and when I explained to him, HE GAVE IT TO ME!! Yay and I love it. Hugs Christine , Johannesburg, ps, love this question, so many ideas!!!
