Has anyone ever tried stumpwork? I found the cutest little animals but have never done it before. Is it just like applique

I think it is like a 3D applique. Very pretty...but I've never tried it. Hopefully someone here has.

I've received a framed stumpwork design at a sewing retreat. It's fabulous and is Iris flowers, I think. Haven't tried it myself, but here are some to look at.

I downloaded the instructions for the tiny berry garland from windflowers. Based on the instructions it is hand embroidery.

I just remembered that Eric put up a recent project which would probably also come under the banner of stumpwork.

I never heard of this and still do not understand it after looking at all the sites shared. Is it done by hand?

Thank you all for the links. This is a great question! Has anyone actually tried these? Some look so complicated.
