Baby Hamper?

What are the best items to include in a baby hamper if it your 1st Grandchild.
So far I have a quilt and a knitweave blanket and would like to know of some other very useful gifts to make.
It is very easy to go overboard and waste a lot of energy making items that are not used or appreciated.
I also like to knit so I am restricting to making only 3 items in each age size 3-6mths; 6-9mths; 9-12mths;
What items of clothing are in a basic have-to-have wardrobe?
Hugs Bev

Bibs and burp cloths are very useful! A towel with a hood to wrap the baby in after bathing.

Another lady had a cute idea the other day - she gave a "medical bag" for a baby shower. It contained the most needed "medicines" for a newborn for example it contained vapo ampules, telemant drop for colic, fever syrrup etc.

First things first LOTS OF LOVE NANA:) A car seat tidy with wipes, disposable nappies bum cream, spare dummy or pacifier in container, things in easy reach in the car. I made this for my DIL and she loved it. A donut is fun to make and very useful, specially if you put handles on it and some heavy duty press studs or buttons and buton holes, can then doubl up as a carrier for while baby is still small, or as a toy carrier and place to play when a bit bigger. I knitted a few baby shrugs which are great for a bit of warmth.

Thank you Dear Cuties,
My gift is going to include all things mentioned.
I have a wonderful list to shop with and projects to do list. Due date is early January 2013 so I have time. It is hard not to get excited already.

My daughters in the last 3 years with 2boys & 1 girl both liked cloth holders holders that take the place of zip lock plastic bags... for wipes and diapers together. They both chose fun fabrics, too. They both wanted dozens of burpees/cloths. They were really fun to personalize with embroidery and I didn't add any fabric trim.
