Question of the Day for May 31: Today I am wondering How many other cuties Have been a VENDOR @ local events or craft fairs & the like or had a booth? Someplace where they sell what they sew. & If sew what do you sell & do you have a particular signature item & what do you make that sells really well that isn't a seasonal item @ all? & what have you made that doesn't sell well?

Good questions. Looking forwards to hearing what crafters sew and what they sell or don't sell. Thank you for asking this.

My best sell item ever was yard signs. I also did wood-working..as well as embroidery and painted designs on clothes and some jewelry. I even painted peppermint candy on a plate for a customer one Christmas to put on her buffet for after the meal and dessert. I sold tons of Xmas decorations also. Time of the year and the size and variety of the items on sale at each craft fair determines the crowds! That is always the "iffy" thing with craft fairs. First of the month and good weather is a must!!!! My expensive denim jumpers sold really well but I bought the jumpers/shirt to match and then decorated them. I did have a 60 hr a week job besides my crafts.

The last two years sales have been slow, but a lot more men have had booths. I credit that to the fact that a lot of people have lost jobs. The $10 range items that my friend makes sells best. Headbands seem to be the rage. She puts insects on hers.

I've made and sold jewelry for years. Out of hundreds of designs (necklaces, bracelets, and earrings) I never made the exact same thing twice, hence my logo was SNOWFLAKE DESIGNS by jg....because there are no two snowflakes alike.
I branched out into embroidered bibs, pillows, fsl ornaments and bulb covers which were decorated with beads, pearls, and crystals, still never making any two alike so I became Snowflake Designs and etc. by jg.
The jewelry continued to be my best seller, with bibs second, and ornaments third. The pillows were ooed and awwwed over but didn't sell. People didn't want to pay what they were worth. They became Christmas Gifts.
I have retired from craft shows and only sell in a consignment shop now....no deadlines, no quotas to meet.

I should have added that my prices were always negotiable. If someone bought at least two pieces I gave them a big break on other items. Many times I gave earrings with a necklace and bracelet set. I became known for that and people actually bought more. I also had deals like $6 each for the bibs or two for $10. Same kind of deal on ornament. People love bargains.

It might depend on where you are in the world. A lot of people in my area are frugal (cheap) and crafty. I got more people looking at my items to try to copy the design than to purchase. One lady asked my booth partner to show her how to make the reversible scarf my friend had designed herself for free.
The things I did learn; any item over $5 people asked if I took credit cards. Very few locals had cash but were willing to buy if they could debit or credit the purchase. They wanted more choices/colors than I had finished. They also wanted things personalized on the spot. So, if I ever do it again...I will take my embroidery machine with me and a credit card reader.
I am sure other places are different. People from other areas were willing to spend money and valued my skill and my time. The locals were looking for yard sale prices.
Just try to have fun with your daughter. I am sure you will do well...unless you are coming to my part of the world. lol

Hi Loralye.....I only do 3 craft shows a year and all in the fall...I sell my knitwear & embroidered items. The knitwear, sweaters, shawls & camisoles are all one of a kind sell out by the 3rd show. The embroidery items are hit & miss until the December show, then they sell well. I do not negotiate prices as I put what I think is a fair price to begin with & I don't want people to think of my booth as a flea market type thing. I also make polymer clay jewelry and have good results with that as well... I wish you much luck with your sale...

This is one of your best questions. I am not sure we ever come out in min wage standards. Sometimes .if I asked what to charge , I gauge what would would you pay for an item. The toilet paper covers have been a win ! win! FOR ME as far as money invested in the project. over the years , I have sold them for several prices and I have settled for a minimum. Kay
