"Tools" of the Art Post III - Needles What kind to buy? How often to change? Where to buy? How to choose needle? Here is a pic of a lot of needles. Not all needles or sizes are represented, however the question of what, where and how can be generalized. Change needles every 20 – 25,000 stitches. Gold needles last 5X’s longer. Select the type of needle based on your fabric and function and the size of needle based on your thread choice. Organ brand needles are cheaper and longer. Organ needles are quality needles and yes they are cheaper than Schmetz needles.

Dull needles are more likely to break!
They come in many sizes.
For regular 40 weight embroidery thread that is either polyester or rayon use a size 75/11 or a size 80/12. Not any larger.
Using too large a needle when embroidering puts too large of a hole in the fabric/stabilizer when the needle penetrates them and less space or fabric between the stitches.
Therefore the thread of the stitches has very little to hold on to.
This weakens the designs integrity and the design will not look as crisp or nice as it should.
It can cause parts of a design to not turn out right and can cause the design to fall apart over time.
Found that you can but need to use a leather needle. The article said they had a kind of blade on the tip. I had some Klasse leather needles and a magnifying glass. Did not really see a blade but they are definately different and look more like a wing-needle.
