This is a wonderful quilt. I know of the opinion we were told to use flannel to back a jean quilt, however in my humble opinion it is a matter of choice.. I like the idea of taking so weight off the quilt with a lighter weight fabric. The problem for me is the flannel will be more apt to have grass cling to it. For use at picnics I would leave it as is. Apply patches if you choose or emb and add a patch to protect the stitches on the back. You could even applique with a jean patch. Just thoughts.

It's a matter of choice. Using jeans for both sides makes it heavy, but you used it for a picnic blanket and that works great! I actually made one for my kids years ago just for that purpose (didn't have embroidery machine back then). Although, I only did one layer of jeans to make it more like a blanket. They used it a lot, especially the first summer - their friends thought it was awesome - just imagine what they would have thought if I did emb. on it!
I think if you continue to use it as a blanket, I wouldn't worry about baking the back over with flannel - just decide on a way to repair it.

I think it depends on how much repair is necessary. If it were mine I would leave this one as is and continue to use it as a picnic blanket and start over fresh with a new one, embroidered and backed with a lighter weight fabric. Just my humble opinion.

Great quilt....I would just repair it....flannel will wear out long before the denim will....I would imagine you have many memories of using your quilt...I love denim quilts and your is very nice.

Often I see jeans for $1.00 a pair at Salvation Army or other thrift stores that I go to. I have also bought sheets there that I use to back quilts. You can find jeans for even less at garage sales. There is no end to what you can recycle with a little imagination.

I have to agree with everyone else. I would just patch it. I like the idea of doing some embroidery and using that as a patch. Blending the old with the new.

since I have made it into 6 quadrons I think that I will do the patches & I am thinking picnic style sew can anyone tell me where I might find some ants that I could embroider?

It's a nice size and I would repair it with some denim about the same weight as what's on it. Like that it is heavy for a picnic blanket. Stays put better.

Denim a favorite lasts and lasts. I would just repair. Maybe make another so can look back from 20 years version to where and what your can do now. Your work and denim will probably out live you.
