I have just had some sad news. My ex husband died of a a heart attack this morning. He is the father of my eldest daughter. Seeing my daughter on Skype earlier just broke my heart. I just did not know what to say to help her sadness. Sarah.

Sarah, the fact that you were there when she needed you is enough. Tell her how much you love her and want to help her through this time.

Oh Sarah how sad for you and your daughter. I am sure that you will be a tower of strength for her even though you don't know what to say.

Thank you Terri. I do not feel like a tower of strength at the moment. With my daughter being in Italy at the moment it has really complicated things. She is looking into flights at the moment.

Thank you so much Bettina - it has been such a shock. Charlotte is organising flights to get her over to Johannesburg for the funeral.

Oh Sarah, I'm so sorry for you and your daughter. Even though he was your "ex" he was still a huge part of your life and I'm sure holds a special place in your heart. I will offer prayers for both you and your daughter for strength to handle your loss.

I am so sorry for your loss, as well as your daughter's. There is little one can say or do to ease another's grief, in such a situation as this. You can only tell her you are grieving with her. Even though, he is your ex, he is still the father of your child, once was your beloved, with whom you have some wonderful memories, so your pain is deep, too. May the Lord bless you during this difficult time.

Sarah, I'm so sorry for your loss, and your daughter as well. It's hard enough to lose a dad without all the stress of having to get flights from another country. I hope everything goes well on that end, and you can be together to comfort each other, so necessary at a time like this. You both have big hugs and prayers of support from me. Marji

Sarah, I hardly ever have time to come to personals & just happen to click it as I have a few spare minutes....feel like I was guided here to see this post so I could give you my heartfelt condolences. I sobbed for months when I lost my Dad, so just know that being an ear & loving support will be the best thing you can do...I am so sorry for you both!!

Thank you Vicki. We were only married for five years but in the last few years we had become good friends again. I will write to you soon. Hugs Sarah.

A little girl (no matter her age) always needs her daddy. It was the hardest thing in my life -- dealing with my father's death. I was quite young but the need to ask his advice or get a big bear-hug has never faded.
Always speak highly of him and assure her it is OK to cry.
Always listen to her re-tell her memories of him.
Never expect her to "get over it" and you will always help to heal her broken heart.
Praying for her comfort and that she will find a way back in time.

Thank you for this. Unfortunately David only came back into her life a few years ago so it has been a bit of a roller coaster ride.

I am sorry about that. If you are like me and my family we are still friends with our ex - just can't live with them. Hope your daughter has only good memories - if you can talk to her about them. I know it is hard.

Thank you all for your very kind words. It is a difficult situation as we were divorced many years ago. My daughter really never knew her father as he remarried and had another three daughters. I know it was very difficult for his 'new' wife to accept my daughter. It has only been the last 10 years that they have started seeing each other again. My daughter is now 42 years. Sarah.

Oh Sarah, this is such a hard situation. To be far away from your daughter, with her loss, is just sooo hard. I live far from my family, and these things are the hardest. When my ex-husband's parents died within 3 days of each other, I just wanted to be there with my kids. We sent flowers, and I think that helped. I will pray for your daughter and her family and for you too. It's a strange feeling about ex-inlaws. Love and hugs, Jan

I would imagine she will grieve as much for the relationship she never had with him, as she will for him, himself.
Thank you Jan for your extra comment - you certainly understand the situation.

Sarah, I am so sorry for your loss and your angst over your darling daughter. She knew you couldn't fix her heartbreak, she just needed to see the face of her mommy and you were there for her. In the days to come, try and think of something specific that comes to mind about him that maybe you haven't shared before. A sense of humor, a silly quirk, a funny way of doing things, something he made/bought just for her. Give her a little history. That will be a gift to her and aid in her healing. Sending you hugs.;)

This is difficult as he has not long been back in her life. She has made the decision to fly back from Italy to Johannesburg to attend a memorial for him. Unfortunately she will not have the time to come to the Cape. Thank you for your kind words
