Watch Stitch Delight, too. They are bringing back older designs into the new website, and they're $1 for a day or so while they're reintroduced. She does a lot of FSL, Battenburg, and some cutwork. It would be worth $1 or so to get some designs to try, see if you like doing it.

It's hard to tell what to look for. Personally I like the holes to be cut not too small and the satin stitch rather dense to cover the cut edges well. Just try a fee freebies.

Bernini, Pfaff and Husqvarnaviking have beautiful designs to go with their cut work needles - which can be used without those needles, just cut with scissors instead. I found no free designs on their sites, but they do sell nice (and expensive) collections.
If you have their (latest) software you can easily digitise some yourself.
Should you have Embird then you can use a tutorial from Clipartopolis, University section, Embird tutorials - I followed that one and loved the result so much that I made several.

Cutwork has to be my favourite embroidery. I think it is because I feel as if I am doing something instead of just watching my machine. My favourite designs are from Hatched in Africa. The main thing to look out for is being careful with the hoop when removing from your machine for cutting. I always cut out the 'holes' on a table so I keep everything as flat as possible. I would suggest that you have a trial run on a piece of material, similar to the fabric that you will use for finished result. I usually 'do' my cutwork on a bought shirt to make it a bit different. I attach one of the first shirts I did. You can also see the wrong side of the butterfly I did on the yoke at the back. For this shirt I used cotton embroidery thread which gives a lovely finish with no shine. Good luck and I hope we see something from you in projects. Sarah.
