I use Pe-Design and not too many problems with colours. I do always change them to Brothers colours in my program.

I have PE design. This happens all the time to me. In your software for embroidery, before you go to the machine, there should be a place to change the colors of things you download.
Your machine should be fine.
Somewhere between the computer and the download the pattern changes colors. It is due to the colors on the website and your particular download method being different. Hope this helps. Welcome to Cuties !

I never changed the colors with the program, I have the same exact brother and use My Editor, I keep a bible with the design name and write down the original color and beside it write in the color I used, I have then a record of each design, I have gone back to last years design and made kitchen towels to match the pot holders for this years presents. Welcome to Cute. I have to say I follow my own ideas for the colours when sewing out. BUT if I want to be close I open the picture on the site I bought the design from and collect the threads required and make a list out of the colours on the order they stitch. Embroidery Library designs are great for their colour charts. Happy sewing and have fun, just hope you dont get too many green faces in your embroidery or other 'odd' colour matches

A huge Aussie welcome from me - with regard to your question about other formats - I've included a website with names etc. I know you can use DST but you have to change all the colours otherwise you might have weird facial colours (as Asterix has said). If you have conversion programme like Pulse or WinRar (there are others too) you could try out different formats. Good Luck, love and blessings Chris

Welcome to Cute Embroidery, glad to have you in the group! About your software, I have Janome's Digitizer Pro, and when I change the colors in the software, it saves the changes. Are you changing the name of the design, and using "save as"? Perhaps that would help, I don't know your software. Even if I change colors in the Digitizer, I do it to see how it's going to look, I don't rely on my machine to tell me the right colors. So many new colors and thread brands have come out since 2006 when I got my machine, that even if I set it to Robison Anton colors, they're usually off. What I do is keep the laptop with the design & colors I've chosen open beside the machine, and go to the laptop for the colors, and ignore the machine. That seems easier that trying to make the machine do what it doesn't want to do. The color stops are right, just not the thread names, so I just pick my own from the software. Thanks for all the feed back.
Tried the "Save As" and even tried saving as several different sub types (new name/new format).
If I redesignate the colors within the design, it changes them on the screen and looks great. The one thing I will say is consistant is that the "save preview" is consistant (though "wrong") with what colors the Brother tells me is needed when I get it to the machine.

O-well... for now, I've adopted the method suggested by severals of going off the thread color/order list that came with the pattern. First sample went well that way, though I can see that its a matter of time before I get my first green-face.

For now this I'm just doing small stuff for the family, so mistrakes are not costly and just part of the learning process.

I save old envelopes for scrap paper, and when I am looking at my design in my software (Designer's Gallery), I write down the colors in a list, adding things like "face" "Hair" etc. Then I get my threads out and have them lined up in order, and just look at both places before I put the next color on. Sort of that "measure twice, cut once" thing. Than I can chance my notes if I don't like a certain color if I intend on making more than one of the design.

In MY EDITOR, after you open file and choose design--it is then possible to access the Color Manager--the globe in upper left corner. Click and page opens --at top click the 'color' bar and choose type of thread you use & try to match to colors of design..for instance, no Brother thread colors listed, so I chose closest w/40 colors and set for that, etc etc. When you change color from bar at top..doesn't save for any other designs-just that one. Hope it helps get you started!

OH, re the sub-files? I save as .pes, then v4 or 2002ULT..designs should work with your machine--can't remember if the SE-400 is listed in choices. Editor doesn't list later sub-files--new market software..but I still use it a lot. Is this the question you were asking?
