Hi Carolyn: I used to buy cheap long sleeve t-shirts and used them for painting shirts. You could buy a cheap one and cut it up the back, put some ties at the neckline and at the waste, add a couple of pockets.
Try and google childrens painting aprons, there are lots of ideas there

When my kids were in grade school they requested the parents to send in a small adult T-Shirt for them to wear for messy projects. I turned up the hem and made some pockets and before long several of the kids had pockets on theirs. Some T-shirts are long and narrow and some are wide and shorter in length. You could also use a boys of mans small dress shirt.
