Beautifully done and well done to you for keeping them in the family. These would have taken a long time to hand-sew so I'm assuming they were worked on for Rosalind's bottom drawer and long before she knew her future husband's name. Do you think that could be right? Jan

Lovely, lovely memory of your great grandmother, made in an era when girls were embroidering and preparing their dowry (not sure about the correct spelling) since they were very young. Sometimes they had so much linen done that some items were passed intact to their daughter, as it happened to my grandmother (my father's mother). I haven't been so lucky but I have a couple of tablecloths made and embroidered by my mother, she had used them before I received them, one from my mother and one from a sister in law.

Sarah in the South young ladies had what they called a "Hope chest" They did what your G.G. mother did embroidered and packed way linens to use when they someday married. I have seen several old hope chests in my young years of my grand mother's friends who never married and became "old maids" beautiful, beautiful work as you have displayed here only yellowed to a beautiful cream color even though they were packed away in tissue papers in ceder chests. All that beautiful work and yet they never used them or had any children to pass them on to. Makes me sad to think of them. It was only after their deaths and fmly members were giving things away to friends that I got to see the contents. Grandmother use to say that on occasions they would get things out just to look at./Lillian

I bought things for my "Glory Box" before I was married like this, but I never did handwork so beautiful as this. It was all the things I would one day have when married. I started this when I was about 15. My grandmother lined all the box and Puppa made it - it was about 4feet long by 2ft high and about 20" wide. I had it for years until about our 5th move and it just didn't make it. Love Chris

I ,like Lillian, am from the South and girls had hope chest and the linens were monograms of the girl's initials and even wedding gifts before the wedding(if monogrammed) would be in the bride's maiden name if given before the wedding. After the wedding the monogram would include the groom. I do have some some of my great aunt's linens, as my grandmother 's all burned in a house fire. I have always been fascinated with Victorian china, linens , and especially sterling silver. I was an avid collector of antique sterling flatware until the prices went through the roof! Now I only wish!! The monograms were on the flatware also. my advise is to to buy a piece even if if is monogrammed. Kay

I do hand embroidery, but these are beyond me. I wouldn't even know where to begin to make the stitches like this. As my hands have started to act up and I got a embroidery machine - I have switched and done much more by machine as it is so much faster. I still do some by hand as I am traveling.

I do have a question - why did they put buttons on the back of pillows? I have never seen a hand made button like this.

Thank you all for your wonderful replies. My 2 daughters will inherit all the linen I have as I have a whole chest of draws full of mothers/ grand mothers and great grandmothers linen - and I still use the table linen!!!

These are beautiful, I too have some hand embroidered linen which has been inherited. Sadly I cannot remember just who embroidered what. Should have listened more carefully when told
