Sometimes when I'm looking for a particular design and don't want to pay for it, I Google "Free elephant embroidery design" or whatever and have found things from time to time.

Try this. go to embroidery designs.com and click on the free embroidery designs tab then when the search box pops up I put in what I'm looking for. It almost always has more than one design. freebies are out there you just have to look. You can have 3 per week at this site
