The crochet is only around the edge. I have an old CD inside and I use a vinyl flannel backed tablecloth cut up for the back. The CD and the vinyl stop water from getting onto your table and the flannel prevent scratching of your furniture.

Beautiful! I want to try to make something similar--my State bird! How do you do a crochet edge; do you put small holes around the edge first?

my mom does the crochet for me and she uses an awl to poke the hole for each stitch, probably ten holes at a time.
