Looks like I should be more careful with my laptop. The delete button has not worked for a week or two. On close inspection I found a pin which was wedged in the keyboard...now removed all is working fine

Don't ask how my husbands mac-book looks after the kids eat something while they watch a film ;o)
My old keyboard from Apple was that with the transparent plastic. Ugly what you can see there...

might have been embrassing if you had taken it to the technician! But this could have happened to most of us, especially the 'lap-top' users.
