Wikipedia says it is the day when most US people are on holiday after thanksgiving and the first day to do the Christmas shopping. Therefore, many online and normal shops have special offers and sales. I also was wondering and "asked" Google - Wikipedia. Sind Sie aus Deutschland?
Wenn ja, ich auch... Maria

Maria the closest to that we used to have in Germany was "Ausverkauf" but here the amount of people is insane.

Angie you have never seen how people stand before the stores when we had "Winter-/ Sommer-Schlussverkauf" ;o)
Former it was not allowed to make specials during the hole year just in that time (about 2 weeks). I remember that my mom always was there and tried to hunt for a bargain. I hated it after she lost me there once as a little child (my mom is just 1,55m and with all this women in a buying spree around you tyou have no chance to find her again).

THE REAL MEANING OF BLACK FRIDAY IS BECAUSE LOTS OF STORES OR BUSINESS ARE ON "RED" AND WITH THE SALES ON BLACK FRIDAY THEIR BANK ACCOUNTS GO BACK TO BLACK....

Oh! thanks for the explanations. Glad it's not some dark, dangerous past legend.

Yes, that's it. Bottom line of the businesses go back to black after being in the red.

Thank you so much for asking this and for all the answers. I had never heard of it before. For obvious reasons here in South Africa the wording 'Black Friday' would not go down too well.

Friday the 13th is believed to be a day of bad luck.

Friday the 13th occurs 3 times in 2012:
■January 13
■April 13
■July 13

The meaning of Friday ▸

What do people do?

Many parties, some with themes similar to Halloween, are celebrated on Friday 13.

Some charities use Friday 13 to hold fund raising events. Friday 13 is a big celebration for motorcyclists at Port Dover in Ontario, Canada. PD13, as it’s called, attracts large crowds.

Friday 13 in August is considered unluckier than any other Friday 13 in Brazil, especially as agosto (August) rhymes with desgosto (sorrow).

In many Spanish speaking countries, the movie "Friday the 13th" was renamed to Tuesday the 13th ("Martes 13") Tuesday 13 is believed to be a day of bad luck, not Friday 13.

Its the friday after Thanksgiving in American where people go crazy and trample each other Chirstmas shopping for so called deals. Some even camp out in the cold for days to be the first through the doors of stores. I personally think people who are that desparate for deals should rethink their spending habits to begin with.
But thats my person view of the madness I stay as far away from as I can.

Mariahail gave the correct answer. Black Friday is the day to put businesses "In the black" financially.
