Cross stitch is my new addiction! It's Martine's fault (I have to blame someone!)
I starched a piece of linen and stitched this design without stabiliser. I used matching bobbin thread so that I could compare the front and back of the stitching. (I also disabled my automatic thread cutting so that I didn't get tufts below the fabric)
I tried to imagine the style of embroidery that the early European settlers in the New World would have taken with them - and brought it up to date.

That turned out very well. I too am taken with cross stitch after getting the Embird module. I have not done a lot yet, still learning.
I had used designs years ago on some Charles Craft towels, they had a panel on the towel. It was heavier than some of the cross stitch fabric and it sewed nicely without stabilizer. I was considering using WSS.
I like the look of yours, and it does look like an old sampler.
I read one article that said to use the 30 weight cotton so I may try that eventually.

When we lived in England my neighbour bought an old sampler that had a pennies and shillings multiplication table on it, in variegated blue (or maybe it was the age of the piece that made the blue a bit uneven - though blue is usually a rather stable colour). It had the same sort of simple outline design. So I think you are right about early pieces looking more or less like this.

Martine is to blame? lol I recall you telling me digitizing is additive. Sewwww I will say She started it you got and others are catching it. I include my addiction and infection to the different modules. I don't have the picture stitching as not interested .... "infected at this time". This looks awesome I have thought the cotton would be great too. It impressed me with the metalic thread.

It looks good from both sides. Some that knew how to use vegetables to dye fibers probably had a better selection to work with in their designs.

You have done such a lovely job - front and back look great. Well done. Cross stitch designs were always so had to find, but seem to stitch out very nicely.

It looks great Sue. I love this classical type of cross-stitch designs (not use a "regular" clipart and press it into the cross-stitch). This classic writing is wonderful and even better cause it looks good back and front :o)
