Hi ladies and gents, I'm not sure where to ask this question and am hoping some of you might be able to help me overcome an issue with the threads that come on the plastic shaped spools.
Now, before you look at the picture the problem is these spools were bought over 6 years ago and since I bought them some of them has just shattered! I do have them in plastic boxes out of the sunlight, away from dust etc. but I just reckon they are plain old now.
My first question is - Is there anywhere I could buy some new empty spools so that I could rewind the threads on to a new spool?
Second question - How do I rewind one spool onto another? Is there some sort of machine that I could purchase to do this, as I've noticed quite a few of these spools are very fragile indeed.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. These were bought here in Queensland, Australia and as I said are old now. I have since bought a lot of Hemingworth and Robison Anton which I'm thrilled with as their spools are much stronger. Love and blessings Chris
Here is the picture of what I'm talking about. You can see that the base only has part of the bottom now and the top has a chunk out of it!!!!!!!! HELP!!!!

this is what I did and it was alot of work but the only way I could save the thread. I wound the thread on bobbins and than used the bobbin on my spool holder and it worked great. I did a few bobbins at a time.

I have had it happen to one spool so far but it is a nuisance even to try and wind to a bobbin as the thread just pools and then knots are formed. I have wasted quite a bit of thread from this one spool.

You can buy blank spools or if you are stuck, I have some that I could send to you (let me know the original spool thread length). As far as winders go, there are several domestic types available. There is the Simplicity Side Winder which can be used to wind both bobbins and spools (this version, however, is battery operated). The second is the Simplicity Delux Side Winder which does noth bobbins and spools and can be adjusted for thread tension and spead. It is mains powered. There are various others............I know Babylock do a mains version, as do Brother but theirs is not available in the UK any longer (something to do with European Directives). What a trooper Dennis! I knew there was something out there in Embroidery land but didn't know what it was called - A Side winder! sounds like a snake! At the moment I think the idea that Lenora (odat1976) has come up with is a great solution and doesn't involve too much energy, batteries etc.

I have both a vertical spool holder and horizontal spool holder. With a thread stand maybe a horizontal holder would work. Thread from machine up to thread stand and back to machine, thread as normal.

I had this happen to me awhile ago.The first time it happened I hand wound it onto another reel & some bobbins.
The next time I had bought a tube of G-S Hypo cement ( has a fine applicator for detailed work )for something else but I still had the pieces so I glued all the pieces back together.The reel is still like new & it was a lot easier to use than superglue.The G-S Hypo glue was bought on the internet for $3 or $4 including postage instead of about $12 in the shops

Instead of the glass straw from the internet: hardware shops here in Oz sell different widths of plastic tubing for fish tanks, ponds etc (though the fish tank tube would be way too thin) .. if you take a spool with you you can try out the diff widths while in the shop and you'd probably need less than a metre of tubing. The size I buy 80c per metre and is 8 or 10mm in diameter. Maybe an even cheaper solution? I think I'd also snap off the rest of the broken bits once the tube is inserted, just so you don't snag your thread. :) xXx

I like the idea of the plastic tubing that ODAT1976 has suggested. I think I might go to Bunnings and get some and I've already done what you have suggested and snapped off the top and bottom of all the spools that are broken. I know the thread you are talking about Chris , its happened to me too ,its such a pain , my thread are never in sunlight .I have had to throw a few out , I will have to give the plastic tube a try

Hi Monika, yes, it is frustrating, but I don't want to throw 15 perfectly good spools of cotton away, hence I'll be trying out Odat's idea. I'll pop into Bunnings tomorrow and see if I can find some of that tubing, it's a brilliant solution. Love and blessings Chris

I love all these suggestions. Cuties are the best! I have some spools that were my moms and they are a foam spool and are beaking in the middle when I try to use them so I have been hand winding onto bobbins. I love the tubing idea, it would stabilize the foam. What would we do without the cute community! I would be lost. I seldom post but read and give flowers every day. Hugs, Barba

Find a jar not too much larger than the spool of thread, place the spool into it, laying down or standing up , you may have to test which will work better, that should stablize it so you can whine the thread onto a bobbin, Now use this bobbin as your spool. Hope that helps
